Description
Gasper Vladi, also known in some sources as Gasper Bloody, is a central character in the narrative who appears in the BorN anime arc. He is a first-year student at Kuoh Academy and a member of the Occult Research Club, serving as Rias Gremorys Bishop, a position he holds after being reincarnated as a devil using a rare mutation chess piece.

Regarding his background, Gasper is not a pure-blood vampire but a dhampir, the child of a vampire lord and a human woman. This mixed heritage made him an outcast in vampire society, where pure bloodlines are highly valued. His life was marked by tragedy from birth, as it is revealed that a fragment of the consciousness of the Celtic demon god Balor was implanted within him while he was still in the womb. The presence of this immense dark power caused his mother to die in shock shortly after his birth, as she was terrified by the monstrous form he initially took. Due to his uncontrollable and dangerous Sacred Gear as well as his lineage, he was targeted by vampire hunters and eventually killed. Rias Gremory found him, took pity on his situation, and revived him as one of her devils.

In terms of personality, Gasper is defined by his extreme cowardice and social anxiety. He is a severe shut-in who finds comfort in hiding inside cardboard boxes, leading to the nickname "Cardboard Box Vampire". He is terrified of crowds, speaking to others, and drawing any attention to himself. Compounding his reclusive nature is his practice of cross-dressing; he wears the female uniform of Kuoh Academy because he believes girls' clothes are cuter. Despite his male gender, his androgynous appearance often leads others to mistake him for a beautiful girl. He maintains a very small inner world, preferring to play video games in his room and relying on a paper bag over his head, on the advice of Issei Hyoudou, as a psychological tool to simulate the safety of his cardboard box during interactions.

Gaspers primary motivation stems from a deep admiration for Issei Hyoudou, whom he sees as a role model and a big brother figure. Inspired by Isseis bravery and determination to protect his friends, Gasper strives to become a "man" and overcome his own fears. His loyalty to the Gremory group is a powerful driver, pushing him to fight even when terrified. Another key motivation is his promise to protect Valerie Tepes, a childhood friend and fellow dhampir who helped him escape his oppressive vampire family.

Within the story, Gasper occupies a complex role. Initially, his power to stop time was so dangerous and uncontrolled that the underworld authorities ordered him to be sealed within the old school building. After being unsealed, his role evolves from a liability into a crucial asset for Rias peerage, particularly in reconnaissance and support, due to his ability to transform into a swarm of bats. As the series progresses, his story becomes tied to his internal struggle with the fragment of Balor, which represents a destructive and uncontrollable side of his power that he must learn to master.

Key relationships define his growth. His connection to Rias is that of a saviour; she gave him a second chance at life and serves as his compassionate master. His relationship with Issei is the most transformative, as Isseis constant encouragement and belief in him provide the confidence needed to face the world and his own weaknesses. He shares a unique friendship with Koneko Toujou, a fellow first-year who often teases him, sometimes maliciously, such as by offering him garlic. His bond with Valerie is a powerful link to his past as a vampire and a source of personal motivation for him.

Gasper undergoes a significant character development arc, transforming from a helpless, quivering shut-in into a reliable and courageous fighter. A key turning point occurs when Issei gives him his blood, which allows him to temporarily stabilize and fully awaken the potential of his Sacred Gear. Another major catalyst for his growth is the false news of Isseis death, which triggers a tremendous emotional shock. This trauma causes the Balor fragment within him to awaken fully, unleashing a terrifying power that allows him to defeat a powerful enemy and marking a major step in his evolution. In a future timeline depicted in the source material, he has completely shed his former timid personality, growing into a tall, handsome, and powerful man who becomes one of the six "Transcendent Beings" and is known as the "Temporal Ruler".

Gasper possesses several notable abilities. His primary and most famous power is the Sacred Gear named Forbidden Balor View, also known as the "Evil Eye of Stopping the World," which allows him to freeze time for any object or person within his field of vision. This ability, a manifestation of the Balor fragment's power, can be evolved to a Longinus-class (god-killing) level called Aion Balor, the "Evil Eye King that Rules Space-Time". When the Balor consciousness takes over, he transforms into a towering, dragon-like beast wreathed in darkness known as Forbidden Invade Balor the Beast. In this state, he can generate a field of shadowy darkness that devours everything it touches, nullifies magical attacks, and produces countless monsters to fight on his behalf. As a dhampir, he is a "Daywalker," meaning he can move freely in sunlight without harm, unlike pure vampires, and he has a natural aptitude for magic and computer technology, which he uses to complete his devil contracts online with great success.
