Description
Mikan Akemi is a main character in the series Actually, I Am… She is the childhood friend of protagonist Asahi Kuromine and the president of the school newspaper club. She comes from a family with two younger brothers. As a child, Asahi gave her a pair of fake glasses, which she wears constantly; these glasses later become inhabited by a fortune god in training named Fuku-chan, though Mikan regards the spirit as a nuisance. Her personality is marked by a love for seeing others distressed or embarrassed, and she fills the school newspaper with gossip and scandal, earning her the nickname evil queen. Her primary motivation is to uncover secrets and create sensational stories, often targeting Asahi and the supernatural beings around him. Privately, she has harbored romantic feelings for Asahi since childhood but struggles to reveal them. In the story, Mikan plays a dual role as both a comedic antagonist and later a human ally. She initially threatens to expose the secrets of the supernatural characters, but as she learns the truth about vampires, aliens, and others, she shifts from a potential enemy to a protector, using her investigative talents to help keep their identities safe. Her key relationships include her complicated friendship with Asahi, whom she teases and bullies but genuinely cares for; a rivalry with Shiho Shishido; and a tense coexistence with the spirit Fuku-chan. Over time, Mikan develops from a shallow gossip columnist into a more rounded character who demonstrates loyalty and courage. Notable abilities include her sharp intuition for sniffing out secrets, her manipulative social skills, and her talent for making dangerously unusual sweets. Despite having no supernatural powers, she remains an influential figure within the group.
