Description
Asahi Kuromine is the protagonist of his story, a high school student whose most defining characteristic is his complete and utter inability to lie or keep a secret. His friends have given him the fitting nickname of leaky basket, as his every thought and emotion is plainly written across his face, making him exceptionally easy to read. This complete lack of guile means that even a simple game of cards is a losing battle for him, and his past attempt to hide a crush on a different classmate ended in immediate, embarrassing failure. Standing at 175 centimeters tall with a straightforward and earnest demeanor, Asahi is a fundamentally kind and sincere person, if somewhat prone to being flustered.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he finally works up the courage to confess his feelings to his aloof and mysterious classmate, Youko Shiragami. Upon bursting into the classroom after school, he accidentally discovers her deepest secret: she is a vampire. Youko is allowed to attend a normal school only under the strict condition that no one learns of her supernatural identity, a rule her father enforces with the threat of pulling her out immediately. Rather than being frightened, Asahi is determined to protect Youko and her place at the school. He vows to keep this one secret, shifting his goal from confessing his love to simply becoming a friend she can trust. This promise becomes the central motivation for his actions, as he dedicates himself to shielding Youko from exposure, a task made considerably more difficult by her own airheaded and ditzy personality, which often causes her wings or fangs to appear at inopportune moments.

Within the story, Asahi frequently serves as the straight man, reacting with wide-eyed panic and logical inner monologues to the increasingly absurd supernatural situations that unfold around him. He is often forced to play the role of protector, not only for Youko but also for other non-human friends he makes, whose own strange secrets and careless behavior regularly land them in trouble. His loyalty is unwavering, and despite the chaos his friends cause, he never holds a grudge, continuing to support them with a parental level of care and concern.

Asahi’s key relationships define his journey. His feelings for Youko Shiragami are constant and sincere, having admired her since their first year of high school. As the series progresses, his kindness and reliability cause his feelings to be reciprocated, and they eventually begin dating. Other girls, such as the class representative Nagisa Aizawa, also develop feelings for him, but he remains faithful to Youko and politely rejects their advances. He also contends with Mikan Akemi, a childhood friend who runs the school’s newspaper club and whose aggressive pursuit of scoops constantly threatens to expose the very secrets Asahi is trying to protect.

Asahi’s notable abilities are not supernatural but personal. His greatest strength lies in his capacity for acceptance; he is able to adapt to any situation or person, regardless of how strange or otherworldly they may be, and treat them with normal, genuine kindness. This trait, more than any physical power, is what draws the supernatural characters to him and allows him to function as the emotional core of the group. His development throughout the story is a journey from being a boy who cannot hide his own feelings to a young man who faithfully and successfully guards the life-changing secret of someone he loves, proving that his honesty can be a source of strength rather than just a weakness.
