Description
In the series Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls, the character primarily known as Mero is actually a mermaid princess named Meroune Lorelei Du Neptune. She is often called Mero for short, and this description refers to her. She is the fifth monster girl to join the household of the protagonist, Kimihito Kurusu.
Mero has a tall and slender figure befitting her noble lineage, standing 178 centimeters in length. Her most distinguishing features are her long, light pink hair that often curls into drill-like shapes, and her bright blue eyes. As a mermaid, her lower body is a large, elegant pink fish tail with yellow fins, replacing what would be legs. Because of this, she cannot walk on land and must use a wheelchair to move around. Her skin is naturally covered with a thin, slippery layer of mucus to prevent it from drying out, which necessitates that she wear specially treated clothing that will not slide off. In public, she favors a Gothic Lolita style of dress, which includes a long dress, frilly cuffs, and a hat, an outfit that conveniently conceals her tail and other non-human features. In private or when in the water, she typically wears a specially designed two-piece swimsuit.
Her personality is defined by a fascinating contradiction. On the surface, Mero is unfailingly polite, graceful, and warm-hearted, speaking in a highly formal and refined manner that gives her a regal air. Her gentle and friendly nature often allows her to act as a calming presence and a voice of reason among the other, more boisterous girls in the house. However, underneath this composed exterior lies a deep and abiding obsession with tragic romance. Since her youth, she has been captivated by the story of The Little Mermaid, particularly the original, darker version where the mermaid turns into sea foam as a result of her unrequited love. Mero has a powerful fantasy of experiencing a similarly beautiful, tragic fate for herself, whether it involves her own death, the death of her lover, or being the heartbroken mistress in a doomed relationship. This fascination is so strong that other characters, like Miia, have called her a tragedy freak. Her love of drama extends to masochistic tendencies, as she has been shown to enjoy painful or restrictive situations that most others would find unpleasant.
Mero's core motivation for much of the story is to find the perfect tragic love. When she first moves in, she is not interested in becoming Kimihito's main partner or wife. Instead, she actively encourages Miia to pursue him, hoping to install herself as the sorrowful, pitied mistress who is loved on the side. She finds the idea of heartbreak exquisitely romantic. However, as she spends more time with Kimihito and witnesses the genuine, if chaotic, affection among the household, her perspective begins to change. A pivotal moment occurs when she sees a genuinely intimate moment between Kimihito and Miia, which causes her real pain, making her realize that the fantasy of tragedy might not be as fulfilling as she had imagined. Her motivation evolves, and she eventually abandons the desire to be a mistress, instead declaring her wish to be Kimihito's wife. She still has a fondness for tragic love, but her new goal is a happy ending for herself, albeit one with a slightly dramatic flavor.
Mero's role in the story is to provide a unique perspective on love and relationships, often serving as a foil to Miia's more straightforward, jealous affection. Her arrival is a planned event by the exchange coordinator, Kuroko Smith, making her the first girl whose placement was not an accident. Her key relationships are numerous. She holds deep respect and affection for Kimihito, whom she calls Master, and her feelings for him drive her personal development. Her initial relationship with Miia is complex, as Mero tries to set Miia up as Kimihito's wife so she can be the mistress, but they eventually become more understanding of each other's feelings. The centaur knight, Centorea, is instinctively deferential to Mero because of her royal aura, which Mero occasionally uses to her advantage. She also has a contentious relationship with her own mother, the queen of the mermaid kingdom. Her mother is very decisive and often overrules Mero's wishes, from refusing to let her get a job to making major changes to the Kurusu household, all while believing she knows what is best for her daughter.
As a mermaid, Mero possesses a suite of notable abilities. In the water, she is unparalleled, able to swim at speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour and propel herself high into the air with the powerful muscles of her tail. This tail is also strong enough to knock a person unconscious with a single blow. She can breathe both air and water, possessing gills on her torso, and has a high resistance to cold due to the frigid nature of her ocean home. Her unique physiology allows her to sense water from great distances, and she possesses knowledge of herbalism, specifically the underwater medicinal cures used by her people. She also has a beautiful singing voice, a skill taught to her as part of her royal upbringing.
