Description
Dokurobeh serves as the primary antagonist in Yatterman Night, representing a much darker and more ruthless version of a character who has appeared in various forms across the Time Bokan series. His presence in this story is foreshadowed from the very beginning by an ominous, skull-shaped moon hanging in the sky, a detail that was once a simple gag but here signals genuine dread.
The character’s background reveals that he is an alien who originally came to Earth from another planet. After being shattered into pieces, he spent eons trying to reassemble himself, manipulating others to gather the fragments of his body by promising them treasure. While he eventually succeeded in returning to his home world in the past, he later chose to come back to Earth, driven by a deep-seated desire for revenge against the original Yatterman heroes for interfering with his plans. His rage eventually boiled over, leading him to wage a full-scale war on the world. He succeeded in killing the heroes, shattering the moon, wiping out a large portion of the human population, and banishing the Doronbo gang, the family of thieves who had once unwillingly served him, to the wastelands.
Dissatisfied with mere destruction, Dokurobeh enacted a far more cruel and elaborate scheme. He stole the identity of his defeated enemies, proclaiming himself Lord Yatterman, the ruler of the newly established Yatter Kingdom. By posing as a descendant of the legendary heroes, he used propaganda to paint the original Yatterman as the saviors and the Doronbo as the sole villains responsible for the world’s suffering, creating a tyrannical society where his rule is seen as humanity’s only salvation. His physical appearance in this series reflects his new role; instead of his former skull-shaped stone form or portly human disguise, he now possesses a tall, humanoid body. He sports a monocle, a long mustache that drapes down his face, and grey hair with a prominent black patch, giving him an aristocratic and menacing presence.
Dokurobeh’s personality in Yatterman Night is stripped of much of the comedic and bumbling nature seen in earlier iterations. While he retains some of his signature mannerisms, such as adding a verbal tic to his sentences, these traits are played in a much darker light, making him a purely sinister and calculating figure. His primary motivation is no longer simply self-preservation but vindictive punishment. He seeks to break humanity's spirit completely, not just rule over it. To this end, he has enslaved the remaining human population, forcing them to work themselves to death in factories that generate the energy needed to sustain his immortality. He explicitly plans to exhaust every last human being, using their despair as fuel for his eternal life.
His role in the story is that of the absolute ruler of a dystopian world and the mastermind behind all its suffering. He maintains his iron grip through several means. He has built a robotic army of Yatterman shells and their mechs to enforce his will. Most horrifically, he has captured and brainwashed twelve innocent people, turning them into his elite enforcers known as the Yatter-Guardian Gods, who are programmed to see him as Lord Yatterman even when he reveals the truth. When the new generation of the Doronbo gang, led by Leopard, arrives at his throne, he offers to let them join him, fully knowing they will refuse. He then has them thrown into prison, revealing that even if they had accepted, he would have simply brainwashed them as he did his other servants.
Regarding key relationships, Dokurobeh is the source of all conflict. His actions directly create the story's central tension, as the protagonists are the descendants of the very people he wronged. His history with the original Doronbo gang of thieves is one of pure exploitation; after their constant failures, he cast them and their entire families out to live in poverty, using them as scapegoats for his own evil. He was also responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the deaths and suffering of the families of the new protagonists, including turning Alouette’s father, Gorozo, into a cyborg soldier named General Goro who was forced to serve him.
The character’s development across the series shows his transition from a manipulator to a conqueror. Having failed numerous times in the past, he ultimately took matters into his own hands and achieved a horrifying victory. This success did not satisfy him but instead led to a complete moral descent into a tyrannical god-king. His arc concludes when he is finally confronted by the new Yatterman, who wield the legendary mecha, Yatter-Wan. In a final battle, Dokurobeh grows to a colossal size to fight back, but he is ultimately struck down by the new heroes, seemingly ending his reign of chaos for good. Among his notable abilities, he possesses genius-level intelligence used for planning and manipulation. He can brainwash and rewire human minds, create advanced robotic duplicates of heroes, and sustain his immortality by draining life energy from enslaved people. He also has the power to grow to a massive size for combat and wields abilities such as telekinesis and electrokinesis.
