Description
Katō Kiyomasa is a character who first became playable in Samurai Warriors 3, having previously appeared as a non-playable officer. He is a young warrior serving under the Toyotomi clan and is recognized as one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake for his valor. He came from a poor background and was raised under the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, initially serving as his page before rising to prominence. This humble origin deeply shapes his worldview and his fierce sense of gratitude toward his lords.

In terms of personality, Kiyomasa is hot-tempered and rowdy, yet he possesses a relatively sound and realistic view of the world, combining bravery with wisdom. While he can be single-minded and careless at times, behind his cold demeanor hides a warm and honest nature. He is adamant about his beliefs and refuses to bow down to others. Among his peers, he often acts as the mature one, looking out for the scatter-brained Masanori Fukushima and attempting to temper the cocky attitude of Mitsunari Ishida.

Kiyomasa’s primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to Hideyoshi and Nene, whom he considers his family and saviors. His driving goal is to protect the legacy of the Toyotomi clan, specifically Hideyoshi’s son, Hideyori. He is determined to uphold his duty to his departed lord no matter the cost, believing that the best way to preserve the Toyotomi name is through pragmatic action, even if it means making difficult alliances.

Within the story, Kiyomasa begins as a page and grows to become a key general for Hideyoshi. He and his friends swear to establish and protect Hideyoshi’s dream of a unified land. Following the death of Hideyoshi and the rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu, he faces a critical decision. Believing that the Toyotomi family can only survive by relying on Ieyasu, he makes the painful choice to leave Mitsunari and join the Eastern Army at the Battle of Sekigahara. Although he knows he is being used by the Tokugawa side, he feels he must do so to provide for Hideyori’s future. After the fall of the Western Army, he devotes himself to keeping vigilance over the Toyotomi stronghold at Osaka Castle, becoming an "impregnable wall" for Hideyori. He stakes his life to defend the castle, and it is implied that the final conflict at Osaka only becomes possible after his off-screen death, as his presence alone had deterred Ieyasu.

His key relationships form a central part of his character. He is very close friends with Masanori Fukushima and Mitsunari Ishida, and they are affectionately referred to as "idiots" by their ally Sakon Shima. Though they share fraternal respect and call each other "fool," he clashes with the equally stubborn Mitsunari over the future of the Toyotomi clan, a rift that widens into a painful divide as war approaches. He greatly admires Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Nene; his loyalty to Nene is so strong that it borders on an infatuation, though she tends to be oblivious to his confessions. He also holds a deep respect for the warrior Muneshige Tachibana, calling him the greatest warrior in the west.

Kiyomasa undergoes significant development from a rowdy youth competing with his friends to a tragic protector burdened by duty. Early on, he is eager to defend his "home" alongside his comrades. However, after Hideyoshi’s death, his realistic beliefs force him to abandon his friends to join Ieyasu, a decision that pains him greatly. Despite this, he never wavers in his true goal of protecting the Toyotomi. In later storylines, such as in Samurai Warriors 3, he eventually rejoins the Toyotomi cause for the desperate defense of Osaka Castle, showing that his ultimate priority remains the preservation of his lord’s legacy. He matures from a simple young warrior into a man who understands sacrifice, willingly carrying out his fallen friend Mitsunari’s will to protect what remains of their home.

Regarding notable abilities, Kiyomasa is a formidable warrior who wields a halberd or scythe-like weapon, giving him a wide attack range. He is known historically for his skills in fortification, a trait reflected in his strategic thinking in the games. His bravery in battle earned him the prestigious title of one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake.
