Description
Katakura Kojūrō is a character from the Samurai Warriors series, serving as the loyal right-hand man and chief strategist to the Date clan’s young and ambitious lord, Date Masamune. The character is the game’s representation of the historical figure Katakura Kagetsuna, a renowned retainer of the Date clan during the late Sengoku period. Before becoming a fully playable character in Samurai Warriors 4, Kojūrō appeared as a non-playable generic officer in earlier titles. He is known by the nickname Kagetsuna the Wise, a testament to his sharp intellect and sound judgment.

Kojūrō’s personality is defined by a calm, stern, and profoundly dedicated nature. He is a prudent and wise individual who consistently prioritizes the safety and future of his lord, Masamune, above all else. In stark contrast to Masamune’s often reckless and flamboyant behavior, Kojūrō serves as a voice of reason and restraint. He is a cultured and well-dressed gentleman who speaks politely to friends and foes alike, yet his loyalty to Masamune is absolute and unwavering. His rationality does not stem from a lack of passion but from a deep-seated commitment to preserving the Date clan and ensuring his lord’s success, even if it requires making difficult or unpopular decisions.

His primary motivation is the well-being and prosperity of Masamune and the Date clan. This drive compels him to take on various roles, from a battlefield commander to a political strategist. Kojūrō’s actions frequently demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice his own well-being for his master. A pivotal event in his backstory involves him carrying out Masamune’s command to remove his lord’s own eye, an act that fills him with agony and a lifelong sense of duty. In battle, he has been known to shout I am Masamune to draw enemy fire and danger away from his lord, a tactic he employed both in history and within the game’s narrative to protect Masamune from harm.

Within the story of Samurai Warriors, Kojūrō’s role is that of Masamune’s most trusted advisor and protector. He accompanies his lord from his earliest campaigns, providing supplementary leadership and counsel, especially during times of emotional turmoil, such as the traumatic death of Masamune’s father. Kojūrō is frequently shown assessing situations with a level head, as when he discreetly opens communications with the powerful Toyotomi clan after realizing that open defiance would destroy the Date. This pragmatism leads to a critical moment where he pushes for a defiant stand to prove the Date’s strength, only to immediately advise surrender to ensure their long-term survival. His foresight and political maneuvering are key factors in the Date clan’s ability to maintain a degree of independence after submitting to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

The most significant relationship in Kojūrō’s life is his bond with his lord, Date Masamune. This connection goes beyond a typical master-servant dynamic, evolving into a deep, unbreakable partnership built on trust and mutual reliance. While Kojūrō is stern and often chides Masamune for his rashness, his loyalty never falters. He is willing to bear the anger of powerful figures like Hideyoshi to protect Masamune from political fallout. For his part, Masamune deeply values Kojūrō, and his lord’s trust is shown when he dismisses Kojūrō’s confession of a secret offer from Hideyoshi without a second thought. Kojūrō’s entire identity is intertwined with Masamune’s, and his actions are consistently taken to ensure his lord’s legacy.

Throughout the series, Kojūrō undergoes a subtle but significant development. While he begins as a weary retainer constantly surprised by his master’s antics, he grows to fully accept and support Masamune’s ambition. Later storylines, particularly in Samurai Warriors 4-II, showcase a man grappling with guilt and a profound sense of duty. After the Date clan’s submission to Hideyoshi, he correctly interprets Masamune’s subsequent revolt as a ploy to restore the morale of their demoralized retainers and takes the blame for the uprising upon himself. In his final days, suffering from a dire illness, Kojūrō forces himself to join Masamune at the siege of Osaka Castle, viewing his potential death in battle not as a tragedy, but as the ultimate, selfish act of loyalty to forever etch his service into the Date legacy.

In combat, Kojūrō is a formidable warrior with a unique and versatile arsenal. His primary weapons include a sword and a bladed shield that also functions as a firearm. This combination allows him to alternate between offensive swordplay and defensive, shielded attacks. In addition to these weapons, he is also associated with a flute named Shiokaze, an heirloom he historically played to signal the start of the Date army’s march, indicating that his talents extend beyond mere martial prowess into the cultural arts. His moveset is classified as Special, and his character is symbolized by the kanji for wisdom and loyalty, which perfectly encapsulates his role as the brilliant and devoted guardian of the One-Eyed Dragon, Masamune.
