Description
Priapus is a supporting character in the anime Maria the Virgin Witch. He is an incubus familiar created by the witch Maria at the request of her other familiar, the succubus Artemis, who had found and saved a lost male owl in the woods and asked Maria to transform it. Because Maria created him while still innocent and without a full understanding of male anatomy, she inadvertently left out the male reproductive organ, making Priapus an incomplete incubus. This deficiency causes him significant distress and limits his ability to perform the seductive duties normally expected of an incubus.

In personality, Priapus is generally level-headed, polite, and orderly, often serving as the voice of reason within Maria's household. He is more composed and restrained than Artemis, and he frequently criticizes her crude impulses, which clash with his sense of propriety. Despite his composed exterior, he is deeply devoted to Maria, always referring to her as Lady Maria with the utmost respect, and he finds genuine purpose in serving her even amid his personal frustrations.

His original motivation was to fulfill his intended function as an incubus, seducing and distracting soldiers in the Hundred Years' War so that Maria could halt battles without bloodshed. Because his physical incompleteness prevents him from carrying out that role, he instead approaches soldiers with polite counsel and empathy, advising them against violence and supporting Maria's broader peace efforts. His personal arc centers on searching for identity and purpose despite his limitations, and he eventually finds validation not in his intended function but in his loyalty to Maria and his commitment to non-violent resolutions.

In the story, Priapus assists Maria in her anti-war interventions and participates in her plans alongside Artemis. He also handles many of the domestic tasks of Maria's forest home, such as managing the household, to support her large-scale enchantments and her efforts to end the conflict between France and England.

His key relationships define much of his role. With Maria, he shares a creator-and-familiar bond of absolute devotion, managing her home meticulously and supporting her spells with quiet dedication. With Artemis, he has a tense, sibling-like rivalry, marked by exasperated exchanges and mutual annoyance, though the two collaborate effectively in their shared mission. With the young soldier Joseph, Priapus feels deep sympathy, seeing Joseph's plight as emblematic of the futility of war, and he offers him sensible advice and understanding that the human appreciates.

Over the course of the series, Priapus develops from a frustrated familiar hampered by his deficiency into a more self-accepting figure who embraces service, counsel, and loyalty as his true strengths. As a familiar, he is capable of demonic magic and assists Maria with her enchantments, and his appearance is that of a youthful humanoid with green eyes and short blonde or yellow hair, reflecting his origin as a transformed owl.
