Description
Garfa is a mercenary serving in the French army during the Hundred Years' War. His primary motivation is financial gain, viewing warfare as a source of income. This leads to a deep-seated irritation with Maria the witch, whose magical interventions frequently halt battles before they can truly begin, thereby depriving Garfa and his comrades of their pay.
As a soldier, Garfa is a pragmatist driven by a desire to be rich and acknowledged. This ambition makes him both dangerous and ruthless. In one notable incident, he becomes involved with the lover of a knight, a transgression that forces him into a duel for his honor and his life. He survives the duel by employing underhanded tactics rather than fighting fairly.
His violent and opportunistic nature escalates when he murders Yvain, the leader of his mercenary unit, in order to take command of the group himself. During the ensuing battle, however, Garfa suffers a severe wound, losing his left arm to a stray cannonball. He survives the injury and, receiving a metal prosthetic arm, becomes the new leader of the mercenaries. Following his recovery, he pledges his full loyalty to Bernard, the head of a local monastery. His prosthetic arm is not merely a replacement but a weapon, as it features retractable blades at the hand.
Garfa becomes a major antagonist in the story after conspiring with Bernard to neutralize Maria. His goal is to strip her of her immense magical power, which is tied to her virginity. Acting on Bernard’s orders, he assaults Maria with the intent of raping her to break the divine seal on her powers. He first incapacitates her using a drug or incense, then brutally beats her, leaving her traumatized and unable to use her magic. This act leads to Maria’s capture by the Church.
His role in the story culminates in a confrontation with Joseph, a young man who works with Maria. Garfa easily defeats Joseph and nearly kills him, only to be stopped by the arrival of Maria, who has been stripped of her powers. Despite his martial skill and his mechanical arm, Garfa is ultimately beaten by Joseph in a final clash, leaving him broken and feebly protesting his defeat.
