TV-Series
Description
Fumihiko Makabe is the father of protagonist Kazuki Makabe and the widower of Akane Makabe, who was assimilated by the alien Festum several years before the series begins. Following the death of the previous commander, Kozo Minashiro, Fumihiko assumes the role of commander of Alvis, the organization responsible for defending the island of Tatsumiya and operating the Fafner mecha units.
Possessing a quiet, thoughtful, and surprisingly kind-hearted nature beneath a stoic exterior, Fumihiko is a man deeply marked by past trauma and guilt. A former member of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, his experiences include not only fighting the Festum but also killing other human beings, an act that left him with a lasting trauma and a strong personal aversion to human conflict. This is reflected in his command style, where he has been known to explicitly avoid giving orders to fire on other people. His wife's death while protecting him from a Festum led him to consider himself a sinner, creating in him a sense of personal responsibility and a temporary emotional distance from his son, as both father and son struggled to openly discuss their inner feelings and worries.
Despite this initial strain, which gradually improves after Kazuki explicitly tells his father that the assimilation was not his fault, Fumihiko is a dedicated parent who runs a pottery workshop above their home, a craft he learned from his late wife. Notably, he took his wife’s surname upon marriage, a fact that is unusual in Japanese culture. His early attempts at pottery were often physically distorted, symbolizing his own internal inability to fully understand the nature of the Festum, a goal his wife had pursued. However, following a conversation with the Festum Myornia before the First Azure Operation, his creations begin to take proper shape, suggesting a personal breakthrough in his perception. His domestic skills are otherwise limited, as he is known to be an incompetent cook who famously fails to rinse rice, leaving most household chores, particularly cooking, to his son.
As the commander of Alvis, Fumihiko faces the immense moral weight of sending the island’s children, including his own son, into combat against the Festum. While he initially shared his generation's intense hatred for the Festum and advocated for all-out war, his experiences as a father shifted his priority towards protecting the younger generation from the same bloodshed. He balances military necessity with genuine concern for the pilots' well-being, maintaining a strong front to provide stability even as he privately reflects on his failures, often while looking at a photo album of his late wife and apologizing to her memory. He respects the intellect of young Soushi Minashiro and relies on his expertise. During the events of Exodus, his tactical decisions demonstrate a calculated compassion, such as when he orders the island’s reflective camouflage lowered to rescue a damaged Human Army transport craft, an act that goes against standard protocol. When interacting with personnel from the Human Army, he expresses surprise upon learning that his son Kazuki has gained a heroic reputation among them.
By the time of The Beyond, Fumihiko’s physical condition has visibly declined, requiring the use of a crutch to walk. He commands the R-Boat during the critical Fifth Operation Azure. After the operation fails, he emphasizes the urgent need for a recovery strategy to prevent global and homeland destruction. Throughout his long struggle against the Festum, his defining characteristic is his ability as a commander and a father to reconcile his traumatic past and duty with a focus on preserving the future for the next generation.
