Description
Kenji Kondo is a character who appears throughout the Fafner in the Azure series, including the Fafner Exodus storyline. His role evolves significantly from a frontline Fafner pilot to a dedicated medical officer for the Alvis organization on Tatsumiya Island, while still retaining his qualifications to pilot a Fafner unit. As an original first-generation pilot, he initially operated the Fafner Mark Acht during the early conflicts.

In his younger years on Tatsumiya Island, Kenji is known for his outgoing and somewhat frivolous personality. He is a good-looking young man who openly prioritizes social activities and seeking female attention over his studies. He serves as the student council president at the junior high school, a position he acquired because no one else ran against him, leading many to mistakenly assume the more reserved Soushi Minashiro holds the role. Kenji cultivates a one-sided rivalry with fellow pilot Kazuki Makabe, frequently challenging him to various competitions, although Kazuki does not reciprocate this sense of rivalry and usually emerges victorious. He is part of a close-knit group of friends that includes Sakura Kaname and Mamoru Kodate, and the three train together at the dojo run by Sakura's father, where Sakura regularly defeats him in sparring matches. He lives with his mother, Ayano, with whom he shares a close but teasing relationship.

A central driving force behind Kenji's actions is his deep admiration for Sakura Kaname. Initially frank about his fear of piloting the Fafner, his motivation changes after witnessing Sakura's own fear in the heat of battle. This moment becomes a turning point, solidifying his resolve to become stronger specifically so he can protect her. This desire to shield others, especially Sakura, matures him from a reluctant participant into a dedicated defender of the island. In Fafner Exodus, his relationship with Sakura culminates in their marriage, which takes place to reassure Sakura's mother during a time of crisis, and she becomes Sakura Kondo.

By the time of Fafner Exodus, Kenji has shifted towards a primarily medical role. He is shown conducting physical examinations for new pilots, voicing professional concern for their well-being. His duties include administering treatments, such as providing painkillers to Soushi Minashiro, and advising on medical protocols during combat. His interactions with colleagues like Maya Toomi reflect his increased maturity; he maintains a professional and approachable demeanor, even insisting she dress appropriately in the medical bay. Despite his behind-the-lines role, being a witness to battles from a support position is emotionally challenging for him. His perspective is also shown in lighter moments, such as sharing meals at Kazuki Makabe's restaurant.

Kenji's background includes training at Sakura's dojo, where he was easily defeated, and a foundation of piloting the Fafner Mark Acht. His surname Kondo combines the characters for near and wisteria, while his given name Kenji incorporates sword and officer.

His role becomes critically important in later events, such as The Beyond. During the Fifth Operation Azure, he operates the Siegfried System to coordinate Fafner units securing retreat paths. While performing this duty, a Festum breach triggers a system-wide assimilation that begins to physically manifest in him. In a desperate act to counteract this and free the other pilots connected to the system, he injects himself with three Activion tubes into his neck. This self-sacrificing action causes severe hemorrhaging but successfully cancels the crossing for most pilots, though he fails to halt the ongoing assimilation of another individual, Rina Nishio. During this crisis, he views a personal video of his wife and son, underscoring his protective instincts.
