Description
Suzume Iwato is a 17-year-old girl living in Kyushu with her aunt, Tamaki Iwato. Born to Tsubame Iwato in Miyako, Iwate, she received a wooden chair crafted by her mother as a present for her fourth birthday on May 24, 2010.
Her mother died in the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. While searching for her mother, Suzume became lost in a realm called the Ever-After after passing through a mysterious door. There, she encountered a mysterious person who gave her a three-legged chair resembling the one her mother had made and guided her back to the door. Outside, her aunt found her and subsequently adopted her. They relocated to Tonami in Miyazaki. Before leaving, Suzume blacked out the pages of her diary that detailed the disaster but left the page about the encounter intact. She buried the diary in a time capsule.
Suzume has light skin, dark brown hair, and light brown eyes. She is often seen in her school uniform: a white short-sleeved button-down shirt with green-striped cuffs and breast pocket, a red stringed ribbon, and a knee-length green skirt. She wears black socks over brown loafers, though near the end of her journey her loafers are switched with Souta's boots. She typically wears her hair in a ponytail with orange and red hairpins but lets it down near the end of the story. She also wears another outfit gifted by her friend Chika Amabe: a white t-shirt tucked into khaki shorts, a denim jacket, and her signature hairpins. With this outfit, she sports a half-ponytail and a low braid.
Suzume is an ambitious and determined teenage girl. She exhibits a strong sense of responsibility and determination, often displaying fearlessness in the face of danger, a trait influenced by her childhood trauma and her view that living or dying is a matter of luck. She is quick-witted and unafraid to speak her mind, often displaying a snarky demeanor, especially toward those close to her. Despite her rebellious and impulsive streak, she is essentially kind and honest. She is highly athletic, capable of navigating stressful and physically demanding situations with agility.
On September 25, 2023, Suzume dreamed of her childhood encounter in the Ever-After. That same day, she met Souta Munakata, a young man searching for a ruin. Intrigued, she went to the ruin herself and found a door open to the same world from her dream. She picked up a strange stone nearby, which turned into a cat named Daijin and ran away. She later returned to the ruin after seeing a red column of smoke invisible to others. There, she found Souta trying to close the door, and together they sealed it. Souta was injured during the process, and Suzume brought him to her home to administer first aid. Souta explained that he belonged to a family tasked with traveling Japan to seal mysterious doors connected to the Ever-After, from which dangerous, earthquake-causing beings called Worms try to escape. During their conversation, Daijin appeared and turned Souta into a three-legged chair. Suzume and Souta, in his chair form, chased Daijin and accidentally boarded a ferry to Ehime.
Suzume insisted on accompanying Souta to seal the doors and find Daijin. They traveled to various locations across Japan, including Ehime, Kobe, and Tokyo. Along the way, Suzume helped close doors in abandoned places, such as a junior high school in Saijo City and an abandoned amusement park in Kobe. She befriended several people who provided food and support, including Chika Amabe and Rumi Ninomiya. In Tokyo, a giant Worm emerged, and Daijin revealed that he had passed the Keystone role to Souta. To prevent a disaster, Suzume reluctantly used Souta, now fully transformed into a keystone, to seal the Worm.
After sealing the Worm, Suzume awoke at a shrine housing the Tokyo gate and saw Souta trapped in the Ever-After. She visited Souta's grandfather, Hitsujirō Munakata, in the hospital to learn how to rescue him. He explained that her ability to see the Worm and the Ever-After meant she had entered the realm through a door in her past. She deduced that the doorway she used as a child was in her hometown in Tōhoku. With the help of Souta's friend Tomoya Serizawa and her aunt Tamaki, she traveled to her childhood hometown, destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. There, she dug up her time capsule and confirmed the door's location. She entered the Ever-After with Daijin and another keystone named Sadaijin.
Inside the Ever-After, Suzume found Souta and freed him from his keystone form. Daijin, injured during the process, reverted to being the western keystone. Suzume and Souta used Daijin and Sadaijin to imprison the Worm and seal the doors for good. Afterwards, Suzume encountered her younger self wandering the Ever-After and realized she was the mysterious person who had helped her as a child. She gave her younger self the three-legged chair and words of encouragement, guiding her back to her timeline. Suzume and Souta then left the Ever-After and reunited with Tamaki and Tomoya. After parting ways with Souta, Suzume and her aunt returned to their town. Months later, Suzume reunited with Souta on the same road where they first met.
