Description
Haruka Misono is the president of the Republic of Tokorozawa, a position of significant authority within the world of The Rolling Girls. Her background, however, is far from ordinary. Behind her human appearance, Haruka is actually an alien who came to Earth from another planet. Before arriving, she worked as an assistant to a scientist named Kishou Ootomo, participating in experiments meant to prove the existence of a phenomenon known as the Moon Hole. During one such experiment, their spaceship met with a tragic accident. Haruka made the critical decision to allow Kishou Ootomo to escape first in an evacuation pod, prioritizing his safety even though it meant she, and another individual named Chiaya, were left behind on the stricken vessel.
This past event is central to understanding Haruka's personality and motivations. Since arriving on Earth, she has taken on the role of a devoted caretaker for Chiaya Misono, raising her as an adoptive mother. Her primary driving force is to ensure Chiaya's well-being and to find a way to return her to their home planet. Haruka is described as being overprotective of Chiaya, keeping her confined to their home out of a deep worry that Chiaya might get into trouble if her true alien form were revealed to others. This maternal care, born from a shared tragedy, forms the core of her character. Her actions, including a cryptic interest in collecting special stones, are all directed toward this ultimate goal. On one occasion, she claimed that stones taken from the protagonist Nozomi Moritomo and her friends originally belonged to her, indicating these objects are tied to her mission. Her efforts are focused on creating the conditions, perhaps on a full moon night, that would allow Chiaya to finally return to her extraterrestrial family.
In the story, Haruka's role as the president makes her a figure of authority who drives events from behind the scenes. She demonstrates a practical appreciation for the abilities of others, such as a character named Matcha Green, whose talents she highly values and considers deploying to other regions. When seven crucial octopus pot-shaped units are stolen by a group known as the Stones, Haruka directs her subordinates, Masami Utoku and Kuniko Shigyo, to travel to Hiroshima to retrieve them. The importance of this mission eventually compels her to go to Hiroshima personally, where she reunites with her former research partner, Kishou Ootomo. This reunion is a key moment in her development, reconnecting her with the past she left behind when she arrived on Earth.
Her most significant relationship is, without question, with Chiaya Misono. This bond, which is both maternal and rooted in a shared off-world origin, defines her purpose. Her relationship with Kishou Ootomo is another crucial thread, linking her to her life before Earth and the experiments that led to her current situation. While her direct actions are often administrative, such as sending others on missions, her personal quest to collect stones and manage the situation around Chiaya showcases a determined and secretive nature. As an alien who is likely of a different species than Chiaya, Haruka's own abilities and true form remain largely mysterious, though her ability to assume a human guise and her knowledge of advanced technology and the Moon Hole experiments are notable. She is a character whose placid exterior as a national president hides a profound, otherworldly history and a fiercely protective, maternal heart.
