Description
Mayu Arita is a student and an enthusiastic fan of the idol group C.H.A., one of whose members, Harada, she deeply admires. In life, she was a fashionable young woman with brown eyes, curly light brown hair often styled with a teddy-bear hair decoration, a mole near her lips, and a taste for makeup and pink nail polish. Her death was a sudden and anticlimactic freak accident: while entering a bath, she slipped on a bar of soap, struck her head, and died instantly.
After death, Mayu arrives at the Viginti realm, a bar operated by the arbiter Ginti. There she meets Harada, and the two are forced to play a game of Twister that will determine their fates. Throughout the ordeal, she maintains a cheerful, happy-go-lucky demeanor, though she is also somewhat clumsy and foolish. Beneath this lighthearted surface, however, she possesses a pure and selfless heart. She is willing to sacrifice herself for those she cares about and refuses to harm an innocent stranger to improve her own situation.
Following the game, Mayu and Harada give an impromptu performance for the arbiters, showcasing her vivacious and spirited nature. Though Harada eventually passes on, Mayu remains in the bar, lingering around the realm to the visible irritation of Ginti. It is implied that she may have taken on some role as an arbiter herself. Later, Ginti creates a false scenario in which Mayu is asked to retrieve a stranger’s soul under the pretense that doing so will bring Harada back; she does not go through with the act, demonstrating that her loyalty does not override her moral boundaries. Ultimately, she and Harada are cast into the void by Ginti.
Mayu’s primary role in the story is that of a supporting figure whose interactions with Harada and Ginti explore themes of devotion, moral choice, and the arbitrariness of death. She has no notable supernatural abilities, relying instead on her sincerity, emotional warmth, and modest talent for entertainment. Her development is subtle: she is confronted with the truth of her own death, bonds with her idol, and faces a moral test that she passes by refusing to endanger another innocent. Through her, the narrative highlights how even a seemingly frivolous person can possess integrity and compassion.
