Description
Mohammed Abdul, also spelled Muhammad Avdol, is an Egyptian fortune teller and a central ally in the Stardust Crusaders arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, particularly throughout the Battle in Egypt portion. He was born in Cairo in the late 1960s and is in his late twenties during the story. From a young age, he possessed a Stand called Magician's Red, a humanoid bird-like entity with the power to generate and manipulate fire in numerous ways. He first encountered Joseph Joestar in 1983 and became a close friend, later accompanying Joseph to Japan to assess the situation of Jotaro Kujo. Abdul is a key figure who helps the group understand Stands and enemy tactics, acting as a knowledgeable guide through the various cultures and dangers they face on the journey to defeat Dio Brando.
In terms of personality, Abdul is serious, cautious, and deeply loyal. He often serves as the voice of reason within the team, contrasting with the more impulsive tendencies of Polnareff and Joseph. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to show strong emotions, particularly when it comes to protecting his comrades. His primary motivation is the safety of his friends and the defeat of Dio, a threat he personally witnessed and barely escaped from shortly after Dio’s resurrection. This personal history fuels his determination and willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Abdul’s role in the story is that of an adviser and second-in-command to Joseph, as well as a mentor figure to younger members of the group. He is often the one to analyze situations and advocate for a cautious approach. He joins Jotaro, Joseph, Kakyoin, Polnareff, and later the dog Iggy, forming the Stardust Crusaders. He helps the team navigate hostile Stand users across Asia and into Egypt, frequently using his fire abilities to both attack and defend.
Key relationships shape Abdul’s journey. His bond with Joseph Joestar is built on mutual respect and long-standing friendship; they fight side by side on multiple occasions, and Joseph deeply mourns Abdul’s eventual death. With Polnareff, Abdul takes on a mentorship role, guiding the hot-headed Frenchman and often saving him from danger. Their dynamic is particularly meaningful, as Abdul’s final act is to sacrifice himself to save Polnareff and Iggy from the Stand Cream, wielded by Vanilla Ice. Abdul also shares a respectful but more reserved rapport with Jotaro and Kakyoin, recognizing their strengths and relying on their abilities.
Over the course of the arc, Abdul experiences significant development. Initially presented as a knowledgeable and somewhat mysterious ally, he proves his combat prowess in early battles, such as defeating Polnareff and later tricking the Stand user N’Dour. A memorable turning point occurs when he is seemingly killed by Hol Horse’s Stand; he survives and reappears later, explaining that he faked his death to gain a strategic advantage. This event demonstrates his cunning and dedication. His ultimate growth comes in his final confrontation, where he selflessly gives his life to protect his comrades, cementing his role as a brave and loyal warrior.
Abdul’s Stand, Magician’s Red, is a short-range but extremely powerful Stand that excels in fire manipulation. He can create intense flames that can melt metal, form fiery projectiles, generate walls of fire, and even shape flames into binding ropes known as Red Bind. One of his signature techniques is the Crossfire Hurricane, a sweeping blast of fire that can home in on targets. The Stand’s power is heavily reliant on Abdul’s focus and the environment, but in capable hands, it provides formidable offensive and defensive capabilities. Despite its strength, Abdul must remain strategic due to the Stand’s limited versatility and his own vulnerability in direct confrontations.
Overall, Abdul is a dedicated, wise, and courageous character whose presence grounds the Stardust Crusaders, providing both expertise and emotional weight to the group’s mission in the Battle in Egypt arc. His sacrifice remains a poignant moment in the series, highlighting the themes of friendship and selflessness that define the story.
