Description
Oingo is a minor antagonist in the Battle in Egypt arc of the anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. He belongs to the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, a group of Stand users serving the main villain DIO whose powers are named after ancient Egyptian deities. Oingo appears in the story arc that centers on him and his younger brother Boingo, in which the two attempt to assassinate the Joestar Group as they travel through Cairo on their way to confront DIO.
Little is disclosed about Oingo's past before the events of this arc. He is presented as a young man of average to above-average height with a muscular build, long dark brown hair, purple eyes, and a long face. His outfit consists of a T-shirt bearing a stylized version of his name, a light vest worn over it, baggy jeans, gloves, and an unusually tall cap with an oversized visor.
In terms of personality, Oingo is brash, cocky, impulsive, and highly overconfident in his ability to deceive others. He believes wholeheartedly that his shapeshifting power makes him unstoppable, and this arrogance repeatedly leads him into disastrous situations. His primary motivation is to carry out his mission for DIO by killing the Joestar Group, earning glory as one of the Egyptian Stand users, although he also acts out of genuine brotherly devotion. Unlike many other villainous partners in the series, Oingo shares a sincerely affectionate bond with Boingo. He is fiercely protective of his younger brother, willingly takes the greater physical risks during their plans, and is moved to tears of pride when Boingo vows revenge on his behalf.
Oingo's role in the story is that of an assassin whose schemes are consistently undermined by bad luck and his own misjudgment. Working as a pair, Oingo and Boingo use the power of Boingo's Stand, Tohth, a comic book that accurately predicts future events. The brothers interpret Tohth's predictions as guarantees of victory and set out to exploit them. In one attempt, Oingo disguises himself as a café waiter and poisons the group's tea, but the plan falls apart when the dog Iggy causes a chaotic commotion and the tea is never drunk. He then disguises himself as the protagonist Jotaro Kujo and prepares a bomb disguised as an orange intended for his target. However, he is mistakenly pulled into the Joestar Group's car by Polnareff and Kakyoin while still wearing Jotaro's face. Unable to convincingly imitate Jotaro's behavior, he grows suspicious to the group, and when he flees on a pretext, he steps on his own bomb. His brother's prophecy that Jotaro's face would be split in two is fulfilled in an ironic way, since the face was the copied face of Jotaro worn by Oingo himself. Both brothers end up hospitalized, beaten by ordinary street thugs whom they had bullied earlier, while the Joestar Group never even realizes it was attacked. The arc is notable for being played for comedy, as the heroes defeat an enemy Stand user without ever knowing a fight took place.
Oingo's key relationships are with his brother Boingo and with the Joestar Group members he targets. Boingo is his constant partner and the person he cares about most; the two operate as a committed team, with Oingo as the bold and reckless executor and Boingo as the cautious planner. Jotaro Kujo is his main target and the person he chooses to impersonate, while Polnareff unknowingly becomes the one who exposes the disguise through small talk. DIO is the master Oingo serves as part of the Egyptian force. Oingo experiences little personal growth over the course of the story, as his arc is defined by the contrast between his inflated confidence and the humiliating failure of his plans. By the end, he is reduced to a hospitalized state, but his devotion to his brother remains intact, and he is spared the deadly fate that many other enemy Stand users meet.
Oingo's notable ability is his Stand, Khnum. Khnum is named after the ram-headed Egyptian creator god who shapes human beings on a potter's wheel, which reflects the Stand's function. The Stand has no independent appearance or personality and possesses no direct offensive power. Instead, it is a self-transforming ability that grants Oingo total control over his own body, allowing him to alter his face, overall appearance, height, weight, voice, and even his scent in order to impersonate any person he has seen. In practice, he mostly relies on changing his facial features and clothing to match his targets. The weakness of Khnum is that the disguise is purely physical; it does not grant Oingo the knowledge, memories, mannerisms, or habits of the person he imitates. As a result, his impersonation falls apart when he is tested on behavioral details, such as when he fails Polnareff's cigarette-related check, illustrating that a copied face cannot replace the identity it belongs to.
