Description
Izumi Hashima is a character from the anime series Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, where she serves as a supporting main character. She is a student initially enrolled in class 3-A at Honoda Junior High School, making her two years younger than the protagonist, Tomoya Aki. After her family returns to Tokyo from Nagoya, she later enters Toyogasaki Academy as a first-year student. Izumi has a youthful and cute appearance, with maroon hair often styled into twintails and pink eyes. Despite her somewhat childish look, she possesses a surprisingly developed figure.
Izumi's journey into otaku culture began in elementary school through her friendship with Tomoya Aki, who lived in her neighborhood. Tomoya gave her a copy of the otome game Little Love Rhapsody 2 along with a PlayStation Portable console for her birthday, a gift that would change her life and spark a deep passion for anime and games. Before this introduction, she was an extroverted and sporty girl who often played outside with boys, a stark contrast to her later persona. Her family relocated to Nagoya before she started middle school, but she remained an otaku and upon returning to Tokyo, she happily reunited with Tomoya.
In terms of personality, Izumi is generally cheerful, energetic, and friendly, often seen with a smile on her face. She can be playful and sometimes air-headed, but she is also known for her tenacity and commitment to her interests. When discussing her favorite otaku topics, particularly otome games, her enthusiasm becomes highly contagious and can overwhelm those around her. Beneath her genial exterior, she also demonstrates a surprising degree of maturity when the situation calls for it.
Izumi's primary motivation is her deep love for otaku culture, fueled by her gratitude towards Tomoya for introducing her to it. She is driven to grow and succeed as an artist. A significant part of her motivation comes from her rivalry with Eriri Spencer Sawamura; she decides to compete with Eriri at the upcoming Winter Comiket and firmly resolves to serve as the illustrator for her brother Iori Hashima's doujin circle, Rouge en rouge. Her role in the story evolves from a junior and childhood friend to a key creative member. She eventually joins Tomoya's doujin circle, blessing software, for their second project, where she handles character design, original drawings, and background art.
Her relationships are central to her development. She shares a close senpai-kouhai (upperclassman-underclassman) relationship with Tomoya Aki, who she views as her mentor and calls by his first name. Tomoya, in turn, considers her his favorite disciple and a potential successor, convinced that her raw talent could one day surpass his own. This potential creates a rivalry with Eriri Sawamura, who fears Izumi's burgeoning abilities as an illustrator. Izumi is also the younger sister of Iori Hashima, and their professional collaboration creates interesting dynamics, as she becomes a key asset for his circle.
Throughout the series, Izumi demonstrates notable growth, particularly as an artist. While her works are initially described as technically imperfect and lacking balance for commercial release, her potential is recognized by both Eriri and Tomoya. She is dedicated to honing her craft, and her development sees her transitioning from a passionate fan to a committed creator capable of working alongside talented professionals. Her abilities as an illustrator form the core of her contribution to the story's exploration of creative passion and rivalry.
