Tatsūma Ushiyama, known as Ushiyama the Undefeated, hailed from Mikawa province, modern-day Aichi. He practiced judo for ten years without a single loss. An affair with his master's wife led to discovery; the master gathered ten students to attack Ushiyama. Ushiyama overpowered them, killing the master and severely injuring the students. One student sustained a caved-in skull, resulting in permanent bed confinement. This act sent Ushiyama to Abashiri Prison.
He possesses a large, muscular frame with short spiky dark hair, defined cheekbones, a prominent brow ridge, and a thick chevron mustache. His judo background left noticeable cauliflower ears. A distinctive square-shaped bump marks his forehead. Ushiyama typically wears a black three-piece suit with a white shirt and tie. Standard Abashiri convict tattoos cover his torso and back.
His personality blends hedonism, pragmatism, and a love for combat. He openly expresses strong sexual desires, regularly pursuing women he finds attractive, whom he respectfully calls "Kannon bodhisattva." Ushiyama relishes challenging fights, forming bonds with formidable opponents like Sugimoto. He often advises caution to allies such as Hijikata, showing strategic thinking. However, he becomes volatile without regular sexual activity.
Ushiyama's combat prowess centers on expert judo. He maintains daily practice by kicking a 60 kg rice bag, enabling sweeps powerful enough to pulverize ankles. His strength allows him to effortlessly lift and throw adults, even breaking ceilings. He once intercepted and threw a charging Kodiak bear. His most notable trait is extreme physical toughness; his skull resisted a direct slash from Hijikata's katana.
During the Escape King Arc, Hijikata recruited Ushiyama from an Otaru brothel. Ushiyama reacted violently initially but joined upon learning of the tattooed skins. He accompanied Hijikata to enlist Shinpachi Nagakura and later confronted thief leader Zenjirou Shibukawa. Ushiyama threw one of Shibukawa's men through a ceiling during the fight and witnessed Hijikata's ruthless methods firsthand.
In the Con Artists Arc, Ushiyama traveled to Yubari with Hyakunosuke Ogata before separating. He tracked Sugimoto and Shiraishi into the Yubari mines, rescuing them from suffocation after an explosion and reuniting them with Asirpa. Later, he helped rescue Kano Ienaga from a burning building by breaking window bars. Under Hijikata's orders, he accompanied Sugimoto, Asirpa, and Ogata toward Tsukigata. On the journey, he hesitated to eat Asirpa's woodcock brains but appreciated her ohaw stew. He expressed admiration for an Ainu religious love poem she shared.
Ushiyama's group reached an Ainu village, negotiating shelter with a man named Ekurok. Around this time, he began feeding and aiding the recovering Ienaga. She asked him when he felt "perfect," a question he initially couldn't answer.
During a train conflict, Ushiyama shielded Asirpa from a grenade blast, sustaining severe injuries including the loss of his left arm. As he lay dying, he recalled Ienaga's question about perfection and answered, "Right now," signifying that sacrificing himself for Asirpa fulfilled his idea of perfection. Shiraishi later noted Ushiyama's strength in battle and weakness for women, observing he remained composed until the end.
