Description
Maria Naruse is a succubus and one of the main heroines of the story. She serves as the guardian and protector of Mio Naruse, her older half-sister. Maria is the daughter of the former Demon King Wilbert and the powerful succubus Sheila, making her the younger half-sister of Mio and Lucia, and a cousin of Basara Toujou. After the death of Mio's adoptive parents, Maria was sent by the moderate faction of the demon world to rescue and look after Mio. The two later come to live with Basara Toujou as his younger stepsisters.
Maria's personality is outwardly playful, mischievous, and childish. She enjoys teasing others, especially Basara, and often uses humor to lighten serious situations. She is clever and creative, frequently coming up with schemes to help her friends or deepen bonds among the household. Despite this carefree facade, Maria possesses a deeply serious and loyal side. She hides profound worries and self-doubt, particularly concerning her mother's weakened state, which she initially blames herself for. Her primary motivation is to protect Mio at any cost, and she is willing to make difficult sacrifices for those she loves.
Her role in the story is multifaceted. She acts as Mio's guardian, a strategic support in battles, and the key figure who creates and maintains the Master-Servant Contract, a magical bond that plays a central role in the narrative. She also provides emotional support and comic relief, balancing the tension of the conflicts.
Maria's most important relationship is with Mio Naruse, whom she loves as a sister and would give her life to defend. Her dynamic with Basara Toujou evolves from playful teasing and antagonism to deep trust and romantic love; she eventually becomes one of his wives. She also shares a close bond with her mother Sheila, her older half-sister Lucia, and the other members of the Toujou household, including Kurumi Nonaka and Zest.
Throughout the series, Maria undergoes significant development. Initially burdened by guilt over her mother's condition, she later learns the truth about her upbringing and accepts herself, unlocking her full potential. She grows from a seemingly carefree young guardian into a mature, responsible figure who embraces both her responsibilities and her own desires.
As a succubus, Maria possesses a wide range of supernatural abilities. She has superhuman strength, agility, and speed, and is classified as a power-type fighter known as a Hard Striker. Her succubus powers allow her to control dreams, feed on sexual desires to grow stronger, and perform baptism rituals that create master-servant bonds. She is also skilled in demonic magic, including illusion creation, memory alteration, and gravity manipulation, which she uses to generate powerful shockwaves in combat. Using her Magic Key, Maria can temporarily unlock a more powerful form that grants her strength on par with S-Rank demons. She also has healing abilities and can boost the power of her allies.
