Description
Ginko Yurishiro is a central figure and one of the titular heroines from this narrative. She is a bear, specifically a Yurikuma or Lily Bear, who takes on a human form to attend Arashigaoka Academy. Her stated age is sixteen. Born on July 24, she was abandoned by her parents as a cub and grew up feeling isolated, having fought in a war between humans and bears as a young bear.

In her outward demeanor, Ginko can appear frustratingly obtuse and cold, a design that serves her role in the story. Despite this cool exterior, she is driven by deep and powerful emotions. She cares very intensely about the people she loves, to the point of obsession and self-sacrifice. Ginko has a habit of stating that she wants to eat Kureha Tsubaki, whom she finds delicious, but this desire is a manifestation of her overwhelming love and longing for connection rather than simple hunger. She is fiercely protective of Kureha and is willing to consume other girls to save her from threats like the Invincible Storm. Her personality shows a stark contrast between her usual expressionless manner and the ecstatic, delusional happiness she experiences when fantasizing about a life with Kureha.

Ginko’s primary motivation is her love for the human girl Kureha Tsubaki. Eleven years prior to the main events, Ginko was a wounded bear cub on a battlefield littered with dead bear soldiers. A five-year-old Kureha found her, sang her a love song, and declared them friends, an act that saved Ginko’s life and made her fall in love. After this fateful meeting, Ginko vowed to reunite with Kureha and give her the promised kiss. Her entire journey across the Wall of Severance, which divides the human world from the bear world, is undertaken solely to find Kureha and deliver her love. She is also driven by a sense of guilt, as she refers to herself as a "guilty bear," a burden that is gradually revealed to be connected to the death of Kureha's mother, Reia Tsubaki.

Within the story, Ginko serves as one of the two bears who infiltrate Arashigaoka Academy, immediately setting her sights on Kureha, who despises bears because one killed her mother. Her role is to be the persistent and unwavering force of love that challenges the systemic oppression of the setting, represented by the Wall of Severance and the Invisible Storm. While the human world tries to force Kureha to conform and forget her love, Ginko stands as the embodiment of refusing to give up on that connection, no matter the cost.

Her most significant relationship is, of course, with Kureha Tsubaki. Ginko is revealed to have been a childhood friend of Kureha, though this memory was wiped from Kureha’s mind. The story centers on Ginko’s attempts to make Kureha remember their promise and accept her love. Her other key relationship is with Lulu Yurigasaki, a fellow bear who decides to join Ginko on her dangerous journey to the human world. While Ginko’s focus is singularly on Kureha, Lulu acts as her partner and support, though Ginko’s confession that she wants Kureha all to herself causes a moment of pain for Lulu.

Ginko undergoes significant development, transitioning from a seemingly cold and distant stalker to a figure of tragic devotion. Early in the series, her actions are ambiguous, appearing both predatory and caring. As her past is revealed, the audience learns that her obsession stems from a singular, life-saving act of kindness from Kureha. This culminates in her standing in the Court of Severance, where she gives up her own feelings of "liking" to allow Kureha to transform into a human. At the end of the story, Kureha gives Ginko her long-awaited promise kiss, and the two depart together on a journey beyond severance, leaving their ultimate fate unknown.

Ginko possesses abilities inherent to her nature as a bear. She can seamlessly transform between her human disguise and her true bear form, sometimes taking on a hybrid half-bear, half-human appearance. She has enhanced senses, frequently smelling Kureha’s scent and describing it as delicious. In her bear form, she is strong enough to attack and consume humans, which she does to the "invisible" students of the academy. Her most notable ability is tied to the story's trial system; upon receiving "yuri approval," she can transform and extract a "lily nectar" from her loved one's chest as a representation of their bond.
