Description
Akura-Oh is a central antagonist in the second season, depicted as an immensely powerful and malevolent yokai, often referred to as a demon king, with a history of destruction that spans at least six hundred years. His background is deeply intertwined with that of Tomoe, the familiar of the protagonist Nanami. In their distant past, Akura-Oh and Tomoe were notorious partners, wreaking havoc together and forming a formidable, unstoppable duo. This partnership came to an end when Tomoe fell in love with a human woman named Yukiji, a turn of events that Akura-Oh could not understand, creating a lasting rift between them.

At some point after his reign of terror, Akura-Oh was captured and sent to Yomi-no-Kuni, the underworld. His current situation in the story begins when the soul of a recently deceased human boy named Kirihito Mori wanders into the underworld. Kirihito, who died in an accident after having a petty fight with his mother, approaches the imprisoned demon and makes a desperate plea. He offers Akura-Oh his frozen, lifeless body in exchange for a single promise: that the demon will use it to apologize to his mother. Acting out of boredom and curiosity rather than compassion, Akura-Oh accepts the offer. He awakens in a hospital room, inhabiting Kirihito's body, and is immediately embraced by the boy's overjoyed mother.

Akura-Oh's personality is marked by cruelty, manipulation, and a charismatic, almost psychopathic nature. He is highly intelligent and views others as tools to be used for his own gain, showing no qualms about discarding them when they are no longer useful. However, his time spent trapped in Kirihito's human body introduces a significant internal conflict. Despite his demonic nature, he finds himself repeatedly making choices that prioritize the feelings and well-being of Kirihito's human mother, even if he does not fully comprehend his own motivations. This influence of humanity begins to soften him, creating a parallel to Tomoe's own journey from a wild fox spirit to a more caring familiar.

Akura-Oh's primary motivation throughout the second season is to retrieve his original, powerful body from the underworld. He seeks to escape the confines of the frail human form he inhabits. His role in the story is to serve as a major threat to Nanami and Tomoe, forcing them to confront both a powerful enemy and the unresolved shadows of Tomoe's past. He is willing to manipulate anyone, including Kirihito's family and other characters like Kayako, to achieve his goal.

His key relationships drive much of the narrative. His past partnership and current enmity with Tomoe is central, as Akura-Oh represents the violent, amoral life that Tomoe has left behind. His relationship with Nanami is also transformative. Her infectious optimism, kindness, and refusal to see him as irredeemably evil begin to chip away at his hardened heart, making him question his own nature. His connection to his human "mother" as Kirihito also serves as a catalyst for his unexpected character development.

Akura-Oh undergoes a notable development arc, primarily through his forced proximity to humanity. He starts as a purely evil entity but gradually exhibits signs of attachment and the capacity for sacrifice, even if he expresses it coldly. In one instance, he is forced to choose between his chance to return to the underworld and the safety of his human family, a choice that proves to be moving despite his outward demeanor. The story leaves his arc open-ended, with his internal struggle between his demonic origins and his growing human feelings unresolved.

Regarding his notable abilities, Akura-Oh is described as a former war god of immense power who once challenged even the concept of immortality. Even while trapped in the body of a sickly human boy, he retains a formidable, threatening presence and a demonic aura. He is also a skilled manipulator, able to bend others to his will. However, the full extent of his yokai powers is limited by his current vessel, which is why reclaiming his original body is his central goal.
