Description
Kanna Makino is a high school student and a close friend of Tamako Kitashirakawa, with whom she shares a class and membership in the school's baton club. She is the daughter of a carpenter who operates his business within the Usagiyama Shopping District, the same lively community where Tamako's family mochi shop is located. This background has given her a deep and practical appreciation for structure, design, and physical measurements, and she often carries carpentry tools like a hammer in her bag.

Kanna has a calm, relaxed, and eccentric personality, frequently displaying a deadpan expression and delivering dry, unexpected observations with complete seriousness. Her unique way of looking at the world is a consistent source of quiet humor, as she expresses fascination with niche topics such as right angles and the feeling of a nosebleed. Despite her unconventional interests and seemingly blank demeanor, she is emotionally perceptive and deeply loyal, supporting her friends in subtle but meaningful ways. She has a fear of heights, which is a significant personal challenge she wishes to overcome, and she also appears to have an allergy to birds, which makes interacting with Dera, a resident bird, difficult for her.

In Tamako Love Story, her primary motivation is to create a lasting memory with her friends by encouraging the baton club to participate in a local marching festival. On a personal level, she is determined to confront and conquer her acrophobia. As she and her friends begin to contemplate their futures after high school, Kanna has already given her own plans considerable thought, expressing a clear desire to pursue a career as an architect, even while acknowledging the challenge posed by her fear of heights.

Kanna plays the crucial role of an insightful and grounding observer within her circle of friends. She gently nudges her companions toward self-awareness, such as when she hints to Midori about unspoken romantic feelings. During Tamako's emotional struggle to respond to a confession from their childhood friend Mochizou Ooji, Kanna offers practical and straightforward help. For instance, she takes Tamako's phone and sends a message encouraging him, demonstrating her quiet support for the relationship. Her calm presence provides a counterbalance to the more tumultuous emotions of Tamako and Midori.

Her key relationships are with Tamako and Midori Tokiwa. With Tamako, she shares a strong, casual friendship rooted in daily school and club activities, offering support without judgment. Her bond with Midori is slightly closer, and Midori is often the one most visibly exasperated or amused by Kanna's strange remarks, making them an effective, if unlikely, team. Kanna's development in the film is twofold. On the one hand, she actively helps Tamako come to terms with her feelings for Mochizou. On the other, she works on her own personal growth. In a direct act of confronting her fear, she climbs a tree with Midori's help, representing a significant step in her journey to overcome her phobia. Her notable abilities include a developed skill in carpentry and design, a strong aptitude for mathematics, and the talent for constructing detailed objects, as demonstrated when she builds a small house out of chocolate.
