Description
Inspector Oniyama is the head of the police department's anti-phantom thief bureau and serves as a primary antagonist in his relentless pursuit of the titular character Joker. He is forty-two years old and his surname is a pun on the Japanese yōkai known as the oni, which aligns with his determined and sometimes intimidating demeanor. In terms of appearance, Oniyama is distinguished by a long, thin mustache, a bald patch on the crown of his head, and long black hair brushed out from the sides. He has a mole between his eyes, sharp-looking teeth, and is almost always seen wearing a signature parrot green suit with a black tie and black shoes. His weapon of choice is a pair of handcuffs, which he wields with notable skill.
Oniyama is defined by his obsessive dedication to capturing Joker, considering it the very purpose of his life. He is almost always present at the scene of Joker's heists, waiting for an opportunity to make an arrest, though his attempts consistently end in failure or backfire comically. This dedication runs so deep that when Joker was once successfully imprisoned, Oniyama fell into a deep depression, lost his energy and motivation, and even drafted a letter of resignation from the police force. Upon learning that Joker had escaped, he immediately tore up the letter and was revitalized with happiness and energy. He has a habit of inserting the word so into his declarations of arrest, with lines like, You are so under arrest, Joker.
Despite his fierce rivalry with the phantom thief, Oniyama operates with a strong moral code and prefers a fair capture over underhanded tactics. In dire situations where a greater threat emerges, he is willing to grudgingly work together with Joker. For instance, when his daughter Haruka was kidnapped, he set aside his animosity to collaborate with Joker to secure her rescue. He also demonstrates genuine concern for Joker's well-being when the thief faces mortal danger, such as from poisoning or missile attacks, and has stated that if Joker were to die, he would follow him to the afterlife to continue the chase. This complex rapport leads to a grudging mutual respect between the two, with Joker trusting Oniyama to apprehend defeated criminals.
Beyond his professional obsession, Oniyama cares deeply for his family, which includes his wife Tomoe and his daughter Haruka. His homelife often sees him being dragged out shopping on holidays, as he is unable to refuse his wife and daughter. He is distraught whenever Haruka is in danger, showing a vulnerable side that contrasts sharply with his tenacious public persona. Professionally, he leads a team of junior officers, including partners Ginko Kurosaki and Momo Shirai, in operations against phantom thieves.
In terms of abilities, Oniyama is physically formidable for a police officer of his age. He has demonstrated significant physical strength and endurance, such as clinging onto a moving train after being thrown off and using his own physical power to climb back aboard. He is also proficient in martial arts, able to subdue multiple enemies with unarmed combat and his trademark handcuff throwing skills. Through his long-running pursuit across Japan and the world, his character develops from a purely comedic, bumbling detective into a more nuanced figure whose dedication to justice and complex personal rapport with Joker make him a respected foil rather than a simple antagonist.
