Description
Chūtarō Kumo is the youngest of the three Kumō brothers who form the central family of the story. As a member of the Kumō family, he lives and works at the Kumō Shrine, from where the brothers undertake their duty of transporting dangerous criminals to the inescapable prison known as Gokumonjo, located on Lake Biwa. At the outset of the narrative, Chūtarō is twelve years old, with a small stature of 145 centimeters and a weight of 37 kilograms. He has black hair and an AB blood type.
Chūtarō’s personality is defined by his cheerful admiration for his eldest brother, Tenka. He is deeply devoted to Tenka and expresses this adoration openly, calling him Ten-nii, while he refers to his other brother, Soramaru, as Sora-nii. His speech pattern is informal and energetic, often ending his sentences with the characteristic suffix ssu. This bright and loyal nature makes him a generally positive presence within the family dynamic. Despite his youth, he possesses a strong will, particularly when it comes to following Tenka’s instructions. He is known to accept any challenge or difficult task his eldest brother gives him without hesitation, determined to see it through.
Chūtarō’s most notable ability is his incredible speed. He is the fastest of the three brothers, with a special talent for short-distance running, which he uses effectively in various situations. His hobbies include collecting insects, and he has a friendly and affectionate relationship with Gerokichi, a tanuki who lives on the shrine grounds. His favorite food is the sugar candy kompeito, and he dislikes sticky or slimy textures such as natto, okra, and yams.
His role in the story evolves significantly from a supportive youngest sibling to a character driven by personal motivation. Initially, he is fiercely loyal to Tenka, looking up to his strength and leadership. However, following the apparent death of Tenka, who is prosecuted and believed to have been executed as a vessel for the demon serpent Orochi, Chūtarō is devastated and consumed by a desire for revenge. Believing his brother died for nothing, he leaves the Kumō Shrine, accompanied by the character Naoto Kagami, to pursue vengeance against those he holds responsible. This period marks a significant departure from his earlier, more innocent self. His journey leads him to the discovery that Tenka is, in fact, still alive. Learning this truth reforms his worldview and his priorities, leading him to abandon his quest for revenge and reconcile with his family. Upon reuniting with his brothers, he becomes a cooperative and integral part of the final plan to destroy the Orochi, assisting Soramaru and the character Takeda in delivering the finishing blow. Throughout his development, his fundamental love for his family remains the constant driving force behind his actions.
