Description
Kanta is a supporting character who appears in the final episode of Mushishi: The Next Chapter. He is a man who works as a carpenter and is a father to a young daughter named Futaba. Kanta's background reveals him as a simple, hardworking family man, but his life takes a profound turn after a seemingly mundane event. While resting in a forest on his way home to his wife and daughter, he eats a red fruit he finds on the ground. This is no ordinary fruit; it has fallen from a special tree known as the Satorigi, or Enlightened Tree.
Following this, Kanta begins to experience vivid memories that are not his own, both in his dreams and while awake. He recalls events that took place long before his birth, including a vision of the protagonist Ginko passing by the tree when Ginko was a young boy. This suggests Kanta is accessing the centuries-spanning memories of the ancient Satorigi tree itself. His motivation becomes intertwined with this phenomenon, as he seeks out the massive tree to understand what is happening to him, though finding it does not bring him happiness.
Kanta's role in the story is centered on the consequences of his encounter with the Mushi. His personality is implied through his actions; he is a doting father who used to tell his daughter, Futaba, tales about his work as a carpenter. However, he has run out of these personal stories to share. His condition fundamentally changes his life and his relationship with his family. The integration with the Satorigi has physical repercussions. Because he stood on a tree root for too long, his legs have begun to transform and integrate with the nature of the Satorigi, making it difficult for him to walk and preventing him from continuing his work as a carpenter.
A key aspect of Kanta's development and his notable ability is his acquisition of the tree's memories. Although he can no longer work or create new experiences of his own, he now possesses the countless stories and memories of the ancient tree. This provides him with an endless supply of tales to tell his daughter, stories that are hundreds or even thousands of years old and which he may never be able to fully recount. His character arc presents a bittersweet transformation, where the loss of his own livelihood and physical mobility is paralleled by gaining an immense, timeless well of knowledge and narrative.
