Description
Midori Imai is one of the main characters in Shirobako. She is the youngest of five friends who were members of the Kaminoyama High School animation club, where they made a short film together and later promised to create a full anime feature after moving to Tokyo. Midori is a university student at the start of the story, and she aspires to become a scriptwriter. Her goal is to write scripts that capture the heart across a variety of anime genres.

In terms of personality, Midori is a passionate and dedicated learner. She is kind, perceptive, and always willing to lend a helping hand to those around her. She has a particularly strong enthusiasm for research, often diving deep into obscure technical details—especially concerning military hardware, vehicles, and history. This tendency earns her the informal label of a "diesel-head." Her speech is casual and slightly sporty, often ending sentences with "ssu." She is nicknamed "Rii-chan" by her friends.

Midori’s role in the story evolves as she transitions from a student to a professional within the anime industry. She initially struggles with how to enter the field, but her meticulous research abilities eventually lead her to a position as a setting assistant at Musashino Animation. There, she works under the supervision of the chief scriptwriter, supplying vital background information that helps ground the fictional worlds of the studio’s productions. Her contributions are especially valuable for the series The Third Aerial Girls Squad, where her knowledge of military details proves essential.

Her relationships with the other four friends—Aoi Miyamori, Ema Yasuhara, Shizuka Sakaki, and Misa Todo—form the emotional core of her journey. They remain close, meeting regularly to encourage one another in their respective careers. Midori looks up to her friends and draws motivation from their dedication. Over the course of the series, she develops from an anxious college student uncertain about her future into a capable professional who finds a unique niche for her talents. Her key abilities are her intellectual curiosity, her capacity for thorough research, and her persistent drive to understand the mechanics of storytelling and world-building.
