Description
Misa Tōdō is one of the main characters in the anime Shirobako, a member of the close-knit group known as the Donuts Quintet, five friends who shared a passion for animation during their time at Kaminoyama High School. She is a 3D computer graphics artist, initially working at the CG production company Super Media Creations after graduating from a vocational school. However, she grew frustrated with her role there, as her daily tasks were limited to modeling car tires, far from her dream of contributing to anime production. After a period of doubt and encouragement from her friends, she decided to leave that job and moved to Studio Kananbun, where she could pursue more creatively fulfilling work in animation.
Misa has a tomboyish appearance with short black hair, a small tuft that sticks up, and bright purple eyes. Her clothing style is casual and practical, often wearing a striped shirt and shorts. Her personality is cheerful, energetic, and straightforward; she tends to speak her mind honestly. Despite her generally positive demeanor, she can be a little airheaded and shy at times, and she occasionally struggles with self-doubt about her career path.
Her primary motivation is to create meaningful 3D animation within the anime industry, a goal that was sparked by her admiration for Ema Yasuhara's drawings back in high school. Throughout the series, she develops from feeling stuck in an unrewarding job to taking on significant responsibilities, such as being put in charge of a key 3D scene involving a baby wild boar riding in an airplane for the third episode of The Third Aerial Girls Squad. This assignment marks a turning point in her confidence and professional growth.
Within the group of friends, Misa is especially close to Aoi Miyamori, Ema Yasuhara, Shizuka Sakaki, and Midori Imai, who support each other through their respective struggles in the anime industry. She is affectionately called Mi-chan by most of her friends and Mii-senpai by Midori. Her journey highlights the often-overlooked challenges faced by 3D CG artists in anime production, including the pressure to find work that aligns with one's creative aspirations. Her ability to collaborate with her team and her determination to improve her craft are notable aspects of her character.
