Description
Chaika Kamaz is the central character of the narrative, a young girl of small stature with long silver hair and large, distinctive eyes. She is typically seen carrying a heavy metal coffin on her back, which is the source of her epithet. Her manner of speaking is initially very stilted and broken, consisting of short, fragmented phrases, though she gradually becomes more fluent as the story progresses. Chaika presents herself as the daughter of the late Emperor Arthur Gaz, a tyrannical and immensely powerful ruler whose empire was defeated in a great war. Her primary motivation is a single-minded quest to travel across the land and collect the scattered remains of her father, which are spread across the continent. She claims that her goal is to give the emperor a proper burial, as his body was dismembered and divided by the eight heroes who defeated him.

Her personality is marked by a quiet and reserved demeanor, which can often be read as emotionless aloofness. Despite this exterior, she is deeply determined and possesses a strong sense of honor regarding her mission. She is sincere and rarely complains, accepting difficult situations with a stoic resolve. Her lack of common world experience and a certain degree of naivety mean she frequently relies on the guidance of her companions. Nonetheless, she displays a deep, empathetic compassion for others, and her willingness to adapt to new circumstances makes her a resourceful ally.

In her journey, Chaika hires two former saboteur soldiers, the siblings Tooru and Akari Acura, to act as her bodyguards and assistants. While the relationship begins as a professional contract, she grows to trust and rely on them heavily, and they in turn become dedicated to protecting her and helping her achieve her goal. Her presence creates a significant conflict with the Gillette Corps, a knightly order led by Alberic Gillette, who views her as a dangerous remnant of the fallen Gaz Empire. They believe that Chaika's existence could inspire a rebellion and restart the continental war, making them her primary pursuers.

Initially, Chaika appears to be a singular individual, but the story reveals the existence of multiple identical girls, all calling themselves Chaika. These individuals are revealed to be clones or creations derived from the remains of Emperor Gaz, each with a fragment of his power and a specific purpose. The primary Chaika is distinguished by her dark attire and is known as the "Black Chaika." The narrative explores the complication of her identity as she realizes she is not the only heir to the emperor's will, leading to conflicts with other versions of herself, such as the "White Chaika" and "Red Chaika," who have different objectives for the emperor's remains.

Chaika is a highly capable battle mage. Her magical abilities are formidable, allowing her to channel power through a weaponized magical focus known as a "gundo," which she fires like a rifle. She can wield various spells and even summon creatures to assist in combat. However, her skills are balanced by a lack of practical experience, and her power is often most effective when combined with the tactical support of Tooru and Akari. Her magical prowess is intrinsically linked to her bloodline and her identity as a scion (or creation) of the magic-wielding Emperor Gaz, making her remains and the artifacts she seeks immensely powerful sources of magic.
