Description
Akira Suga is a character who appears in Gundam Build Fighters Try. He is a Gunpla Fighter who suddenly transfers to Miyazato Institute High School, becoming a key member of its team, G-Master. Prior to his transfer, he was a member of the previous year's champion team, the prestigious Gunpla Private Academy, though it was later revealed that he served as an understudy, only competing due to the absence of another team member.
With brown hair and a relaxed posture, Akira gives a first impression of being very laid-back and perhaps not taking things seriously. He carries himself with a great deal of confidence in his abilities, which can sometimes be mistaken for arrogance. This confidence stems from his deep knowledge and skill, as he possesses a keen understanding of martial arts, specifically the techniques of the Jigen Haoh school of martial arts.
Despite his casual and sometimes teasing demeanor, Akira has a strong personal code of honor. He believes that true fighters should respect their opponents, especially those who give their all in battle. This is most clearly demonstrated when he strikes his own teammate, Yomi Sakashita, after she begins to cruelly mock a defeated opponent, explaining that belittling a fighter who tried their best diminishes the person doing the mocking. This principled stance earns the respect of even the seasoned Ral.
Akira's role in the story is that of a formidable rival to the protagonist team, Try Fighters. He first encounters Sekai Kamiki in a restaurant and immediately recognizes the techniques Sekai uses. He confidently warns Sekai that his moves will not work against him, setting the stage for their intense battle in the finals of the West Tokyo regional championships.
His key relationships include his teammates at Miyazato. He has a notably close, if somewhat bickering, relationship with Yomi Sakashita, often accompanying her on shopping trips and teasingly referring to her outings with Sekai and Fumina as dates. He also shares a connection with Junya Inose, whom he battled two years prior and initially dislikes for his underhanded fighting style, though he shows a willingness to reconcile after Junya reforms.
Throughout the series, Akira demonstrates notable development. While his skill is evident from the start, his loss to Sekai Kamiki, who had specifically trained to counter his martial arts-based tactics, serves as a humbling experience. He takes the defeat in stride and continues to pursue Gunpla Battle on his own terms. In the series finale, he builds a new Gunpla, the Gundam Leopard Da Vinci, and personally challenges Sekai to a rematch, showing his continued growth and passion as both a fighter and a builder.
In battle, Akira is a highly capable pilot known for his speed and skill, earning him the nickname Speedy Sleggar. He primarily pilots the G-P.A.R.T.S DELTA G-Bomber, a powerful support craft based on the G-Fighter from the original Mobile Suit Gundam. His fighting style effectively integrates martial arts principles into Gunpla combat, using submission holds and precise strikes to disable his opponents. He is also a competent Gunpla builder, as shown when he creates his custom Gundam Leopard Da Vinci.
