Description
Lee Geun-Tae is the general of the Earth Tribe in the kingdom of Kouka and the husband of Yun-Ho. He is a bearded, dark-skinned man with brown almond eyes that appear yellow in the anime, and long, untidy dark brown hair which he ties in a ponytail with a rope-like ornament. He is almost never seen without a proud snarl on his face. At thirty-eight years old, he holds the rank of general and serves as the tribal chief of the Earth Tribe.
Geun-Tae possesses a warlike and proud personality. He grew frustrated under the pacifist reign of King Il, as he felt unable to defend the country using his own strength during that era. According to his attendant Chun-Rang, he is bored and restless when there is no conflict. He respects strength above all else and initially pledges his loyalty to Soo-Won after witnessing Soo-Won's power during the Battle Game Festival held in Chi'Shin. This decision reflects his core motivation: he follows those he deems strong enough to lead and protect the kingdom.
Geun-Tae plays the role of a powerful military commander and later becomes a key ally. After being wounded in battle against the nation of Kai, he begins to recognize Yona's leadership and gradually shifts his allegiance. His role evolves from a supporter of Soo-Won to a figure who respects Yona's growth and determination. His key relationships include his wife Yun-Ho, his attendant Chun-Rang, and his military subordinates. His bond with Soo-Won is built on mutual respect for combat ability, while his later appreciation for Yona marks a shift in his understanding of what constitutes true strength.
In terms of development, Geun-Tae starts as a character who values only physical prowess and combat, but he matures into someone who acknowledges other forms of strength, such as leadership and conviction. He learns to channel his aggressive tendencies into protecting his tribe and kingdom rather than simply seeking battle for its own sake.
Geun-Tae's notable abilities lie in his exceptional combat skill and strategic command. He is a formidable warrior on the battlefield, known for his raw power and tactical acumen as a general. His physical strength and experience make him one of the top military leaders in Kouka, capable of leading armies and defending the Earth Tribe's territory against external threats.
