Description
"Akatsuki no Yona" is a fantasy adventure anime series based on the manga by Mizuho Kusanagi. The story begins in the kingdom of Kouka, where Princess Yona lives a sheltered life in the royal palace, cared for by her father, King Il, and protected by her childhood friend and bodyguard, Son Hak. Yona’s life is upended on her sixteenth birthday when her cousin, Soo-won, stages a coup, assassinating King Il and forcing Yona to flee the palace with Hak. The betrayal shatters Yona’s innocence, and she is thrust into a journey of survival and self-discovery.

As Yona and Hak travel across the kingdom, they learn of an ancient legend involving the first king of Kouka, Hiryuu, and the four dragon warriors who aided him in unifying the land. Determined to reclaim her kingdom and protect her people, Yona resolves to seek out the descendants of these legendary dragons, who are said to possess extraordinary powers tied to their bloodline. Along the way, Yona evolves from a naive princess into a determined and capable leader, driven by a growing sense of responsibility and justice.

The narrative introduces the four dragon warriors: Kija, the White Dragon, who possesses immense physical strength; Shin-ah, the Blue Dragon, who has the ability to see through objects and paralyze enemies with his gaze; Jae-ha, the Green Dragon, who has enhanced agility and a leg that transforms into a powerful weapon; and Zeno, the Yellow Dragon, who is immortal and possesses regenerative abilities. Each dragon warrior is bound by their bloodline’s curse, which grants them power but also isolates them from society. Yona’s compassion and determination inspire their loyalty, and they join her quest to restore peace to Kouka.

Throughout the series, Yona and her companions encounter various challenges, including political intrigue, rival factions, and the lingering threat of Soo-won’s rule. The story explores themes of leadership, loyalty, and the consequences of power, as Yona grapples with her desire for vengeance and her duty to her people. The relationships between the characters deepen, particularly the bond between Yona and Hak, whose unwavering support and unspoken feelings for her add emotional depth to the narrative.

The anime adaptation covers the early arcs of the manga, focusing on Yona’s journey to gather the dragon warriors and her gradual transformation into a leader. The series balances action, humor, and emotional moments, with a strong emphasis on character development and world-building. While the anime concludes before fully resolving the overarching conflict, it effectively sets the stage for the continued story in the manga, leaving viewers invested in Yona’s quest and the fate of Kouka.

Yona and Hak travel through the mountains, avoiding main roads to evade detection by soldiers loyal to Su-won. They arrive at a small village where a blind priest named Ik-soo resides in a modest shrine. Ik-soo reveals he has been waiting for Yona, having foreseen her arrival through visions. He recounts the legend of the Crimson Dragon King and the four dragon warriors who pledged their lives to him. According to the legend, the blood of the dragons flows in the descendants of those warriors, and Ik-soo asserts that Yona must find them. He presents her with a hairpin containing a dragon scale, which he claims will lead her to each warrior. Soldiers from the castle arrive in the village, searching for the fugitives. Hak confronts them, using his glaive to incapacitate the soldiers without killing them, but the skirmish alerts nearby forces to their location. Yona listens to Ik-soo’s words and decides to embark on the quest to find the four dragons, accepting the danger it entails. Before leaving, Ik-soo warns that the journey will test her resolve and that seeking the dragons may bring unforeseen consequences. Yona and Hak depart from the village, heading east toward the territory of the first dragon, while Hak questions whether she fully understands the weight of her choice. Yona answers by reaffirming her determination to protect those she cares about and to reclaim what Su-won has taken.

Yona and Hak remain aboard the pirate ship after the crew rescues them from the port town of Awa. The pirate captain, Gi-gan, reveals that one of her crew members, Jae-ha, possesses the power of the Green Dragon, the second of the four legendary warriors Yona seeks. Yona requests Jae-ha to join her, but he refuses, showing no interest in leaving his life at sea or serving a fallen princess. Hak confronts Jae-ha in a brief fight, testing his abilities and confirming the dragon’s strength. Jae-ha explains his past: he was confined and worshipped as a divine being because of his dragon leg, until Gi-gan freed him and gave him freedom. Yona persists, appealing not with demands but by stating her resolve to protect those she cares for and to reclaim her kingdom without relying solely on destiny. Jae-ha observes her determination during a clash with a government ship, where Yona stands her ground despite the danger. Moved by her willingness to act rather than wait for fate to decide, Jae-ha accepts her offer and joins the group. Before departing, Gi-gan provides them with a ship and supplies, and the pirates ensure their safe passage from Awa. The group now sets sail with the Green Dragon added to their ranks, turning their search toward the next dragon while the forces loyal to Su-won continue to tighten their grip on the kingdom.

11The Dragon's Claw
Yona, Hak, and Yun arrive in the port city of Awa to search for the Green Dragon. They find the city under the control of pirates who extort the residents and disrupt trade. An elderly shopkeeper named Gigan shelters the group after a confrontation with pirates who attempted to seize goods from her stall. Hak and Ki-ja drive off the pirates using physical force, but the pirates return with reinforcements, threatening to burn Gigan’s shop. Yona steps forward and orders Ki-ja to activate his Dragon Eye, a display of the mythical dragon warriors that causes the pirates to flee in fear. The commotion draws the attention of Jae-ha, a member of the pirate crew known as the “Sea Green Dragon.” Jae-ha has the ability to leap great distances with his powerful leg, a trait inherited from the Green Dragon bloodline. He observes Yona and her companions from a rooftop, noting her resemblance to the late King Il and her possession of the dragon warriors. Meanwhile, Gigan reveals that the current pirate leader, Hyo, has betrayed the original ideals of the group, using force instead of protecting the port. Yona decides to help Gigan reclaim Awa from the pirates, seeking not only the Green Dragon but also justice for the people. As the group prepares, Jae-ha descends from his perch and directly addresses Yona, introducing himself with a playful demeanor and acknowledging her as the one he has been waiting for. His appearance sets the stage for an immediate test of Yona’s resolve and the potential alliance with the third dragon warrior.

13Episode 13
Yona, Hak, Ki-ja, and Shin-ah arrive in the village of Iksa, a settlement within the Wind Tribe’s territory that seeks the Green Dragon. Villagers report that the Green Dragon, Je-ha, spends his days gambling and drinking, showing no interest in his hereditary duty. A Wind Tribe official named Tetora regularly extorts the villagers, exploiting their dependence on the tribe’s protection. Yona seeks out Je-ha and finds him evasive; he openly dismisses the legend and refuses to acknowledge her as King Hiryū’s descendant. Tetora increases his demands, threatening to cut off the village’s access to water unless the villagers pay an impossible tribute. Je-ha watches as Yona defends the villagers, offering her own belongings as payment and confronting Tetora without fighting. Impressed by her resolve and angered by Tetora’s cruelty, Je-ha intervenes, using his dragon leg to kick a boulder and block the water source Tetora had seized. Tetora retreats, and Je-ha formally joins the group, acknowledging Yona’s strength of character. The party departs with Je-ha, learning from a passing traveler that a warrior resembling the Yellow Dragon has been sighted, setting their next destination.

15Toward the Same Shore
Yona, Hak, and the four dragons arrive in the Water Tribe territory and encounter a village suffering under Governor Kumji’s extortion. Kumji diverts the region’s water supply to his own estate while taxing villagers beyond their means. Yona observes the villagers’ desperation and chooses to confront Kumji directly rather than bypass the corruption. She uses her palace education to assess Kumji’s greed and offers a large sum of money—the reward from the dragons’ capture—in exchange for restoring water access. When Kumji demands additional gold as tribute, Yona reveals her identity as the princess, forcing him to accept the original deal to avoid exposure. The dragons stand guard during the negotiation, their presence reinforcing the threat of violence if Kumji breaks his word. After the agreement, Yona orders the villagers to spread word of the arrangement, ensuring Kumji cannot quietly renege. Meanwhile, Su-won orders the Fire Tribe’s general to suppress a rebellion, showing his administration’s parallel struggle to maintain control through force. Kumji privately resolves to eliminate Yona and her party, viewing them as obstacles to his wealth. The group resumes their journey toward the Water Tribe’s capital, aware that Kumji’s compliance is only a temporary pause before his retaliation.
16Episode 16
Yona and her companions reach the port city of Awa in the Water Tribe territory, where the pirate captain Gi-gan holds control over the docks. Gi-gan tests Yona by demanding she prove her resolve; Yona steps forward and shoots an arrow through a distant target, hitting it squarely. The act earns Gi-gan’s grudging respect and opens the possibility of an alliance. Yona learns that Gi-gan and her crew have been stealing from corrupt officials who exploit the local populace, not from ordinary citizens. She declares her intent to aid the pirates in reclaiming a seized ship and striking back against the oppressive governor. Hak observes Yona’s growing determination and silently supports her, while Ki-ja and Jae-ha remain wary but follow her lead. The group participates in the town’s festival as cover, blending in to prepare for the upcoming raid. Gi-gan reveals her plan to use the celebration’s chaos to board the government vessel and confront the governor directly. Yona practices with her bow further, showing steady improvement under the pirates’ watchful eyes. As night falls, the crew moves into position, and the first clashes break out between the pirates and the governor’s men. The episode ends with Yona standing on the deck of the enemy ship, facing the governor’s armed guards alongside Gi-gan and her comrades.

19The Senjuso Test
Yona, Hak, and the four Dragon Warriors arrive at the Senjuso temple to obtain the herb that can heal the pain in Shin-ah’s eyes. The temple’s guardian, Gigan, informs them that the Senjuso lies beyond a trial designed to test the worthiness of the seeker. Gigan permits only one person to attempt the trial, and Yona volunteers, insisting she must prove her own resolve rather than rely on her protectors. Hak and the dragons remain at the entrance, each wrestling with their inability to assist Yona directly during the trial. The trial presents Yona with a narrow stone bridge spanning a deep chasm, forcing her to confront her fear of heights. She recalls her past reliance on Hak and pushes forward, using the walking staff Gigan provided to steady herself across the bridge. Gigan watches from afar, reflecting on her own past failures in protecting her village, which led her to become the trial’s keeper. After Yona reaches the other side, she faces a second trial: a chamber filled with illusions of her loved ones in peril. She strikes down the illusions, recognizing them as traps meant to exploit her deepest fears, and moves forward. By the end of the episode, Yona secures the Senjuso, but Gigan warns that the herb’s potency requires immediate use, forcing the group to decide quickly. The episode concludes with the party preparing to administer the herb while a new threat approaches from the outside, signaling that their journey faces imminent danger.

22Episode 22
Yona and her companions reach the fire tribe castle where Kumji has barricaded himself. Kumji refuses to surrender and orders his soldiers to attack the group. Hak and the dragons hold off the soldiers while Yona confronts Kumji directly. Yona accuses Kumji of exploiting the people and demands he step down. Kumji responds by revealing he acted under orders from Su-won’s administration to weaken the fire tribe. Before Yona can respond, Su-won arrives with the Sky Tribe army and enters the throne room. Su-won states he has come to restore order and declares Yona’s actions a rebellion. Yona steps forward and asks Su-won whether he knew of Kumji’s methods. Su-won does not deny it and argues that maintaining national stability requires sacrifice. Jae-ha, listening from outside, recalls his past as a slave in the water tribe and how Su-won’s father Yu-hon freed him. Yona refuses to accept that oppression is necessary for peace. She raises her voice to the gathered soldiers and citizens, calling on them to think for themselves rather than obey unjust orders. Su-won orders her arrest, but several soldiers hesitate. Hak breaks through the guards and stands beside Yona. Su-won withdraws his order for the moment, and Yona leaves the castle with her group. The fire tribe citizens begin to voice their own discontent with Kumji’s rule. Kumji, abandoned by his allies, faces Su-won alone. Su-won coldly tells Kumji that he has outlived his usefulness. The episode ends with Yona determined to continue building a new path despite the direct confrontation with Su-won.
