Mizuho Kusanagi

Description
Mizuho Kusanagi (born February 3, 1979) is a Japanese manga artist from Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. She is best known as the creator of the long-running fantasy manga series Akatsuki no Yona, also known as Yona of the Dawn.

Kusanagi began drawing at a young age and pursued a career in manga, working as an assistant to the manga artist Yoko Matsushita from the age of 18 to 22. Her professional career began in 2002 when her one-shot manga Goshin Kyōdai ga Yuku!? won an award at the 27th Hakusensha Athena Newcomers' Awards. She made her official debut the following year in 2003 with the series Yoiko no Kokoroe, which was first published as a one-shot before becoming a serialized work and earned her the 28th Hakusensha Athena Newcomers' Award for Outstanding Debut. All of her serialized works have been published by Hakusensha in the shōjo manga magazine Hana to Yume.

Before achieving her greatest success, Kusanagi authored several other serialized series, including Mugen Spiral (2004), Game x Rush (2005), and NG Life (2006-2009). NG Life, a story about reincarnation connecting the modern day to the ancient city of Pompeii, helped establish her ability to manage complex dual-timeline narratives.

On August 5, 2009, Kusanagi began serializing Akatsuki no Yona in Hana to Yume. The series follows a princess who must flee her kingdom after her father is murdered and rebuild her life while discovering her own strength. Initially, her editor suggested the story would run for approximately five volumes, but its popularity led to a much longer serialization. By June 2024, the manga had over 15 million copies in circulation. The series has been recognized with Hakusensha's Denshi Shoseki Taishō (E-Book Award) for best-selling digital manga in 2015 and again in 2021.

The success of Akatsuki no Yona led to an anime adaptation produced by Studio Pierrot, which aired in 2014 with 24 episodes. This was followed by OVA episodes in 2015 and an adaptation of the Zeno Arc in 2016. Kusanagi has also provided the illustrations for the light novel adaptation of her work. In 2014, she created a short one-shot titled Boku no Kotori-san.

In April 2016, the serialization of Akatsuki no Yona was briefly paused due to a series of earthquakes in Kumamoto Prefecture, where Kusanagi resides, but the manga resumed on May 20 of the same year. Kusanagi is known for her detailed hand-drawn art, reportedly not using CG in her work. Her artistic identity is characterized by dynamic character expressions, detailed depictions of action and weapon use, and a focus on themes of resilience, found family, and political complexity within a historical fantasy setting.
