Masakazu Morita
Description
Masakazu Morita is a Japanese actor, voice actor, and singer born on October 21, 1972. He began his entertainment career in live-action roles, appearing in films, stage plays, and dramas after studying under film director Yukio Fukamachi. His entry into the world of voice acting was unconventional; his first involvement with an animated project was providing motion capture for the character Zell Dincht in the 1999 video game Final Fantasy VIII. His official voice acting debut came with the role of Tidus in the highly acclaimed game Final Fantasy X in 2001, for which he also performed motion capture. He was cast in the role after an extensive audition process failed to find a suitable voice actor. The experience of working with seasoned voice actors on this project inspired him to pursue voice acting as a career, leading him to join the agency Aoni Production in 2003.
Morita's career is defined by a number of iconic and long-running roles in major anime franchises. He is perhaps best known as the voice of the protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki in the long-running series Bleach, a role he has played since 2004 and reprised for the recent Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War arc. He also voices the angel Whis in the Dragon Ball franchise, first appearing in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and continuing in Dragon Ball Super and its subsequent films. Another significant lead role is Shin in the historical anime Kingdom. He has also taken on the mantle of a classic anime hero, voicing Pegasus Seiya in several installments of the Saint Seiya franchise, including Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter and the recent Knights of the Zodiac: Battle for Sanctuary CGI series.
Throughout his career, Morita has demonstrated considerable range, taking on roles across various genres. He plays the calm and collected hero Barnaby Brooks Jr. in Tiger & Bunny, the loyal Kija in Yona of the Dawn, the unpredictable Claire Stanfield in Baccano!, and the villainous Auel Neider in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. He has also voiced characters in popular franchises such as One Piece (as Marco the Phoenix), Shaman King (as Mosuke), World Trigger (as Shuji Miwa), and the K project (as Yukari Mishakuji). In addition to anime, he has had notable roles in live-action tokusatsu series, portraying the antagonist Tenjuro Banno in Kamen Rider Drive.
In 2007, Morita's talent was recognized early in his career when he won the Best Rookie Actor award at the first Seiyu Awards, an accolade largely attributed to his performance as Ichigo Kurosaki. Beyond his voice work, he is also a singer, having made his musical debut in 2012 with the band RING BONES. After being with Aoni Production for 17 years, he left the agency at the end of 2020 to work as a freelancer. As of January 2025, he is affiliated with the agency Stay-Luck.
