Description
Aiji Yanagi is a 28-year-old former police officer who serves as the central figure in the investigation at the heart of the story. Standing at 181 centimeters tall with a birthday on September 5th, he has black hair that falls to his ears and distinctive purple eyes. Prior to the events of the narrative, Yanagi worked in the Investigations Section 1 unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He chose to leave the force due to a fundamental disagreement with its methods, particularly after being ordered to kill a hostage taker during a negotiation, an action he refused to take. After his departure, he formed a private detective agency to pursue the X-Day cases on his own terms, eventually assembling a team that includes Mineo Enomoto, Takeru Sasazuka, and Kageyuki Shiraishi.

Yanagi's personality is defined by a calm, thoughtful, and reliable demeanor. He acts as a natural leader and mediator for his team, which is composed of several strong-willed individuals, and he has earned their deep trust. He possesses sharp insight and is known for his ability to think on his feet, relying on more than just book knowledge. He avoids unnecessary conflict and prefers to listen to all sides of a situation before forming a conclusion. A known chain smoker, he also enjoys drinking and is skilled at cooking and cleaning, having lived alone for a long time. Despite his competence, he is reluctant to embrace his role as a leader and maintains a careful distance from others to avoid endangering them.

The core of Yanagi's character and his primary motivation are rooted in a traumatic event from his past. When he was 16 years old, he witnessed a young girl being kidnapped. He followed the captor to a cathedral in an attempt to rescue her, but he was also captured and beaten. After breaking free from his chains, he viciously attacked the kidnapper with a metal pipe, continuing to beat him even after the man begged for mercy. The young girl, the same person he would later partner with, woke up and was more frightened of Yanagi than of her original captor. This incident, while ruled as self-defense, left him with a criminal record and a profound sense of guilt. The kidnapper was left in a comatose state, and Yanagi continues to visit him in the hospital to this day. This event shaped his unwavering determination to save everyone without resorting to lethal force and fuels his belief that he does not deserve personal happiness. He severed ties with his own family after this incident and joined the police force as a form of atonement.

Within the story, Yanagi acts as the leader of the detective agency investigating the X-Day incidents. His role is to synthesize information, guide his team, and uncover the truth behind the organization Adonis. A key relationship is with his partner, whom he initially tries to keep at a distance because he fears she will again look at him with the same fear she had as a child. As they work together, she helps him confront his past and realize that she no longer sees him as a monster, which allows their relationship to develop into a romance. He also has a notable dynamic with his team members, whom he recruited personally. He acts as a steadying influence for the hot-headed Enomoto and a trusted colleague for the calculating Sasazuka and the enigmatic Shiraishi, even correctly identifying Shiraishi as a spy.

Yanagi undergoes significant personal development throughout the narrative. He begins as a man haunted by his past actions, believing himself to be a monster unworthy of close connections. His journey involves confronting the memory of the kidnapping and learning to trust himself again. In a critical moment, he is presented with a situation similar to the one that caused him to leave the police force, but with his partner's encouragement, he is able to act decisively to save a hostage without killing the perpetrator. By the story's end, he accepts his partner's love and allows himself to envision a future together, finally beginning to let go of the guilt that had defined his life for over a decade. His notable abilities include sharp deductive skills, leadership, marksmanship with a handgun, and practical skills like driving and cooking.
