Description
Kotarō Tennōji is the main protagonist of the story Rewrite. He appears as an ordinary high school student, but this surface is a facade shaped by a complicated past and a hidden supernatural ability. On the surface, Kotarō is known for his frivolous, easygoing personality, often acting arrogant and meddling in the affairs of others without fully realizing it. He is playful and light-hearted, and his antics to revive his school's Occult Club set the initial events in motion. However, beneath this carefree exterior lies a much darker history. Before the main story, Kotarō was a troubled metahuman who did not fit in at school because of his powers. He resented his parents for trying to indoctrinate him into a genocidal cult, and he developed an antisocial and cruel disposition, secretly killing low-level monsters for entertainment. He was eventually recruited by the mercenary organization Guardian. After a mission gone wrong, he fell into a coma for years and awoke with amnesia shortly before the start of the anime, retaining only his ability and a vague sense of his past.
Kotarō is motivated by a desire to find purpose and meaning in his life. Initially, he seeks excitement and novelty, which leads him to investigate supernatural occurrences and get involved with the heroines. As the story progresses and he becomes entangled in the conflict between the organizations Guardian and Gaia, his motivations evolve. Depending on the path he takes, he aims to protect his friends, uncover the truth about the mysterious girl known as the Key, or fight to save the Earth itself.
