Description
Auel Neider is a fictional character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. He is a young man of seventeen years with blue hair and blue eyes, standing 167 centimeters tall and weighing 57 kilograms with O blood type. Born on July 15, he is a Natural by genetic origin but has been artificially enhanced to become what is known as an Extended, a soldier whose physical and mental abilities are boosted through drugs and conditioning to allow him to fight on par with Coordinators. He serves as a pilot for the Earth Alliance’s elite special forces unit, Phantom Pain, under the command of Neo Roanoke.
In terms of personality, Auel is defined by a stark duality. During moments of calm, he displays a relatively cheerful, childlike, and sometimes even timid demeanor. However, once engaged in combat, this facade vanishes, replaced by a brutal and merciless nature. He is described as the most impulsive and savage of the three Extended pilots, often laughing maniacally while destroying his enemies. This split personality reflects the unstable psychological state common among those who have undergone the rigorous and inhumane Extended program, making him a volatile and dangerous individual.
Auel’s primary motivation stems not from personal ideology but from his programmed purpose as a living weapon for the Earth Alliance and the secretive organization Logos. His actions are largely driven by mission objectives, such as infiltrating ZAFT facilities and engaging the ZAFT warship Minerva. Beneath this conditioning, there are hints of a desire for connection, most notably a protective instinct toward his fellow pilot and partner, Stella Loussier, whom he refers to as his sister. He is shown to react violently when others threaten her, though he also has no qualms about using her psychological block word to force her into submission when she becomes uncontrollable.
Within the story, Auel plays the role of an antagonistic force, a member of the trio of Phantom Pain pilots who steal advanced mobile suits and repeatedly clash with the crew of the Minerva. His specific role is as the pilot of the heavily armed amphibious mobile suit, the ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam. He is first seen during the raid on the ZAFT colony Armory One, where he successfully steals the Abyss and proceeds to wreak havoc. Throughout the Second Alliance-PLANT War, he participates in numerous battles, both in space and on Earth, including the break-the-world incident at Junius Seven and several engagements in the streets of Diokia and the Dardanelles.
Auel’s key relationships are almost exclusively with his two fellow Extended pilots, Sting Oakley and Stella Loussier. They function as a unit, bound by shared trauma and military dependency. While he often treats Stella with a mix of contempt and practicality, using her as a tool, he also displays genuine moments of protectiveness. He is notably affected when Stella is captured by the Minerva, and the subsequent forced erasure of his memories of her is incomplete; he retains a lingering sense of loss, realizing something is missing without understanding what. His relationship with authority figures like Neo Roanoke is purely professional, following orders as part of his combat programming.
The character undergoes a subtle but tragic form of development. Unlike a traditional hero’s journey, Auel’s arc is one of psychological unraveling. His instability is most prominently displayed when his psychological block word, mother, is triggered. Upon learning that ZAFT has discovered the Lodonia research laboratory, a place tied to his past, he suffers a complete breakdown, collapsing in tears as traumatic flashbacks overwhelm him. This event highlights his fragile mental state and his complete lack of agency over his own identity. His development concludes with his death, which is also tied to the loss of his memories of Stella, suggesting that his final moments may have granted him a brief, tragic clarity about what he valued.
As an Extended, Auel possesses notable abilities that far exceed those of a normal Natural. He has undergone extensive military training, making him proficient in firearms, infiltration, and close-quarters combat. His most significant skill is as a mobile suit pilot. He is capable of not only piloting complex machines designed for Coordinators but also quickly hacking and rewriting their operating systems to suit his personal specifications. His piloting of the Abyss Gundam is aggressive and effective, making him a persistent threat to the Minerva until his final battle. However, his enhancements come with severe drawbacks, including psychological instability, physical side effects from constant drug regimens, and a critically short lifespan, marking him as a disposable instrument of war. His ultimate fate is sealed during the Battle of Crete, where his Abyss Gundam is impaled by Shinn Asuka’s Blast Impulse Gundam, causing it to crash into the ocean and explode, killing him.
