Description
Maeda Keiji is depicted as a young man with a wild, fun-loving, and unrestrained personality. He is a wanderer by nature, known for his flashy, unconventional attire and his love for festivals and fighting. As the nephew of the Maeda clan members Toshiie and Matsu, he is not bound to the family's military duties and instead chooses to travel across the land. His carefree demeanor often manifests as pulling pranks on his uncle, though he shares a deep, genuine affection for his adoptive family.
Despite his cheerful exterior, Keiji is driven by a painful past, specifically relating to his former close friendship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Their bond was shattered when Hideyoshi killed Nene, the woman Keiji loved, leading Hideyoshi down a path as a brutal conqueror. This event is the primary source of Keiji's inner turmoil and a key motivation for his actions. While he maintains a facade of promoting love, peace, and diplomacy, this behavior is partly a way to avoid confronting the deep-seated troubles left by the loss of his friend and the death of Hideyoshi. He strongly believes that violence and war are not the proper methods to resolve disputes, holding onto the ideal that understanding and love can lead to a more lasting peace.
In the narrative, Keiji often acts as a free agent, not belonging to any single army. His role is frequently that of a wanderer who gets involved in the conflicts of others, driven by his personal connections and his idealistic wish to end bloodshed. A significant relationship is with his uncle and aunt, Toshiie and Matsu, who care for him despite his immaturity and frequently try to bring him back to the clan. Another key relationship is his friendship with Uesugi Kenshin, whom he serves out of loyalty in some storylines. He also develops a romantic interest in the mercenary leader Magoichi Saika, becoming devoted to protecting her after falling for her at first sight.
Throughout his journey, Keiji shows development as he is forced to confront his past. He struggles with the grief of losing Hideyoshi, initially trying to run from these painful memories by distracting himself. Over time, he comes to terms with the end of their friendship and the man Hideyoshi became, allowing himself to finally mourn the loss and resolve his dark past. He also begins to accept the responsibilities he once avoided, gradually gaining an awareness of what it means to be the head of his clan, though he retains his free-spirited nature at heart.
Keiji wields a ludicrously oversized nodachi, a type of Japanese greatsword. Despite its immense size and weight, he is exceptionally skilled, capable of wielding it with one hand. His fighting style is flashy and theatrical, treating battles almost like a dance or performance. He is often accompanied by a small, mischievous pet monkey named Yumekichi, who can fetch items for him in battle, though the results are not always helpful. Keiji is also a wind-element warrior, with some of his attacks able to channel wind-based damage.
