Description
Azazel is a fallen angel and a demon who serves as a central figure in the conflict between humans and demons. Originally a high-ranking angel, he fell from grace after committing a divine taboo, becoming a demon and the loyal second-in-command to Lucifer, the chief of the fallen angels. In the events preceding Virgin Soul, he was a cruel and sadistic antagonist who viewed humans as insignificant insects and took great amusement in orchestrating tragedies, such as the caravan assault that killed the fathers of the bounty hunters Favaro and Kaisar. He saw himself as a story writer, causing suffering for his own twisted entertainment. His only respect was reserved for Lucifer, and he showed no loyalty to other demon subordinates.

By the time of Virgin Soul, set ten years later, Azazels circumstances and personality have shifted dramatically. His demonic homeland of Cocytus has been destroyed by the human king Charioce XVII, and his people have been subjugated, enslaved, and forced into grueling labor to fuel the human capital of Anatae. This defeat has humbled him, though not softened his core nature. He has not undergone a moral redemption; rather, his priorities have changed. His primary motivation is no longer sowing chaos but liberating his people from human oppression and seeking revenge against the king responsible for their misery. He works undercover at a demon-run funeral home in the royal capital while also operating as a mysterious vigilante known as the Rag Demon, assassinating human slave traders and freeing captured demons.

Azazels personality in this series is marked by a stark and often blunt honesty. Unlike humans who might use deception, he is consistently direct about his intentions and his hatred for humans, rarely lying even when it would be strategic. This honesty, however, is paired with a stubborn and authoritarian nature. His methods are brutal and uncompromising, and he tends to force his plans on others without their full consent, as seen when he manipulates the dragon-girl Nina into his scheme for vengeance. While he is capable of caring deeply for his comrades, he is also willing to sacrifice innocent human lives, including women and children, to achieve his goal of defeating the king. He is driven by a deep sense of wounded pride and a desperate need to restore his peoples dignity.

His most significant relationship in Virgin Soul is with a mute, mysterious child named Mugaro, whom he rescued from slavery two years prior. Azazel acts as a protective older brother and father figure to Mugaro, and the childs safety is one of his highest priorities. He also forms a complex bond with Nina Drango, a half-dragon girl. He initially seeks to use her dragon powers for his rebellion, but over time, a grudging mutual respect develops. He also maintains a hostile rivalry with Kaisar, a human knight whose father Azazel killed. While Azazel has no remorse for the act, their history creates a tense dynamic. His ultimate antagonist is King Charioce XVII, the human ruler whose systematic destruction of demonkind fuels Azazels every action.

Throughout the story, Azazel demonstrates notable development. He transitions from a solitary agent of chaos to a leader fighting for a cause greater than himself, showing genuine sorrow when his demon comrades are killed in battle. His worldview, once entirely based on demon supremacy and human worthlessness, is challenged as he is forced to rely on and even save humans like Nina. He is deeply shocked to discover that Mugaro, the child he protected, is not a demon but a holy celestial being, forcing him to confront his prejudices. His journey is one of a proud villain broken by defeat, who finds a new, if still ruthless, purpose in protecting his people.

Azazel is a formidable combatant with a variety of supernatural abilities. He possesses two large pairs of black wings that grant him the power of flight. He is an expert in black magic, with his preferred fighting style involving summoning ghost-like black snakes that he can wield directly or solidify into weapons such as a halberd or a long sword. He is also capable of summoning skeletal minions. His physical appearance is demonic, featuring pale skin, white hair, four horns, and a right arm that is entirely black and monstrous. As the Rag Demon, he conceals his identity with bandages and a tattered black cloak. His height is 187 centimeters.
