Description
Inugami is a central character in the comedy anime Gugure! Kokkuri-san, appearing as a ghost who haunts the young girl Kohina Ichimatsu. As his name suggests, Inugami is a dog spirit, a type of spectral being often associated with curses in Japanese folklore. He joins the story shortly after the fox spirit Kokkuri-san begins caring for Kohina, and his presence immediately complicates the household dynamic.

Physically, Inugami most often appears as a tall, handsome man with neck-length jet-black hair that typically covers his left eye. He has striking red eyes and is almost always dressed in a formal black suit with a matching tie, a white button-up shirt, and a distinctive red armband on his left arm that features the kanji for dog. This male form is his most common appearance. However, due to his nature as a spirit, his exact form is not fixed. He has the ability to shift into a beautiful female version of himself, a trait born from the fact that he can no longer remember what gender he was when he was alive. Perhaps his most notable alternate form is a small, cute mouse doll, a shape he adopts in an attempt to win more affection from Kohina, as it resembles a popular toy among young girls.

Inugami's personality is one of obsessive devotion, filtered through a deeply masochistic and perverted lens. His entire world revolves around Kohina, to whom he refers with the archaic and possessive term Wagakimi, meaning "my darling" or "my lord." He claims to hate everyone, including himself, with the sole exception of Kohina. This adoration stems from his past when he was a living dog; at that time, he was ignored and neglected by everyone until Kohina was the only person who showed him kindness and acknowledged his existence. This singular positive memory forged an eternal, unwavering loyalty in him.

This loyalty, however, manifests in a deeply dysfunctional and obsessive manner. Inugami is a pronounced masochist who becomes excited, often to the point of having a nosebleed, whenever he imagines Kohina hating him or punishing him. He is fiercely territorial, viewing Kokkuri-san as a direct rival who interferes with his relationship with Kohina. Their animosity is so pronounced that Inugami keeps a notebook filled with reasons for his hatred of the fox spirit, and the two frequently engage in petty arguments and physical fights over Kohina. Despite his obsessive love, his advances are almost always unwanted, and Kohina generally treats him with indifference or as a nuisance.

Inugami's role in the story is primarily that of comedic relief and a source of chaos. While Kokkuri-san attempts to act as a responsible parental figure, Inugami exists to disrupt this normalcy with his outlandish declarations of love and his inability to respect social boundaries. His presence often escalates mundane situations into surreal and violent gags. A recurring joke involves the seemingly immortal Inugami suffering horrific bodily harm—being ground up in a blender, launched to the moon, or stabbed with a triangle ruler—only to be completely fine in the next scene. This immortality and his cockroach-like resilience are key components of his character, making him an effective and durable punching bag for the series' humor.

His key relationships are all defined by his obsession with Kohina. He sees Kokkuri-san as a hated rival, often jabbing at the fox's age or relevance. He also has a tense relationship with the tanuki spirit Shigaraki, another eccentric character who moves into the house, viewing him as yet another competitor for Kohina's attention. While he claims to despise everyone else, his interactions are largely focused on these two, whom he considers obstacles to his goal of marrying Kohina. Despite his flaws and the constant rejection, his underlying motivation is a twisted form of gratitude and a desperate desire to be close to the only person who ever showed him kindness.

Inugami does possess several notable abilities beyond his shapeshifting. As a spirit, he is seemingly immortal and cannot be killed permanently, which explains why he survives the constant physical abuse he endures. He also carries a pair of guns with him, which he is willing to use in his conflicts with Kokkuri-san and others. His true power, however, lies not in combat but in his relentless and single-minded nature; he can appear nearly anywhere if he believes it will bring him closer to his darling Kohina.
