Description
Kokkuri-san is a fox spirit who serves as the titular protagonist of the anime Gugure! Kokkuri-san. He is summoned by the expressionless elementary schoolgirl Kohina Ichimatsu when she plays the Kokkuri game alone in an attempt to seek company. Originally intending to haunt her as typical for a spirit of his kind, Kokkuri is immediately alarmed by Kohina's self-neglectful lifestyle: she lives by herself, displays no emotions, proclaims herself a doll, and eats only cup ramen for every meal. This prompts him to abandon his original plan and instead take on the role of her guardian, devoting himself to improving her diet, health, and social behavior. His background lies in Japanese folklore as a low-ranking fox spirit who was once a shrine god but now exists as a wandering ghost, giving him both a sense of lost dignity and a deep well of traditional knowledge.

Personality wise, Kokkuri blends a mischievous, sarcastic streak with an earnest and deeply caring nature. He frequently lectures Kohina on proper manners and nutrition, and he handles most household chores with competence, behavior that often draws comparisons to a doting mother figure. Despite his serious demeanor, he is prone to emotional reactions, particularly stress and anxiety, which manifest in exaggerated ways such as worrying about hair loss. His primary motivation is to protect Kohina and guide her toward a healthier, more connected life, though his efforts are constantly tested by her stubbornness and the arrival of other spirits. He takes his self-assigned responsibility very seriously and becomes emotionally invested in her well-being, to the point of jealousy when other beings try to claim her attention.

In the story, Kokkuri acts as the central anchor of the household, mediating between Kohina and the growing number of supernatural visitors. His role evolves from a simple haunter to a full-time caretaker, disciplinarian, and cook, attempting to enforce normalcy amidst absurdity. His key relationships include his rivalry with Inugami, a dog spirit whose obsessive loyalty to Kohina leads to frequent confrontations and comedic clashes. He also has a strained paternal dynamic with Shigaraki, a lazy and manipulative tanuki spirit who freeloads off him and drains his finances. Their interactions highlight Kokkuri’s role as the long-suffering straight man. Additionally, the cat god Tama develops an infatuation with Kokkuri, causing him further embarrassment and discomfort. Through these relationships, his character shows growth in patience and adaptability, as he learns to coexist with the chaos rather than fight it.

Notable abilities include possession, transformation into an actual fox, divination, the power to perceive emotions, and limited manipulation of physical objects in the human world. He also possesses extensive knowledge of spirit lore and mythology, which he applies to solve supernatural problems. While his spiritual rank is low, he demonstrates cleverness and resilience, often using psychological tactics rather than direct confrontation. His development throughout the series is marked by his deepening bond with Kohina and his gradual acceptance of the unconventional family that forms around him, even as he continues to lament the loss of his peaceful existence.
