Description
Helbram is a character from the anime and manga series The Seven Deadly Sins. He is a member of the Fairy Clan, approximately 1300 years old, and was once a close friend of King, whose real name is Harlequin. Outwardly, Helbram often appears as a tall, older human man wearing an eyepatch and a beard, a disguise he adopted for a specific purpose. His true form is that of a fairy, and his original personality was curious and lighthearted.
Centuries ago, Helbram was fascinated by humans and would often venture out of the Fairy King’s Forest to interact with them. His love for humanity led to a tragic betrayal when he and several other fairies were tricked and captured by human merchants. Helbram was forced to witness his friends being tortured to death as their wings, a valuable commodity, were torn from them. This traumatic event transformed his former affection into an all-consuming hatred for all of humanity. Driven by rage and despair, he took on the appearance of the human who had led the attack, Aldrich, as a self-imposed punishment to never forget his vengeance. For the next seven hundred years, he relentlessly slaughtered humans.
During this long period of killing, Helbram was confronted and killed by his old friend King, who saw the monster he had become. However, as fairies’ bodies do not decay upon death, Helbram’s corpse was recovered and sold on the black market. It was eventually acquired by the Great Holy Knight Hendrickson, who used a forbidden Druid spell to reanimate him as a puppet. In this second life, Helbram served as a high-ranking Holy Knight with the position of Cardinal. He became a trusted subordinate of Hendrickson, carrying out his orders to further his plans to revive the Demon Clan. In this role, he was the superior of Holy Knights Guila and Jericho. He is shown to be ruthless, willing to sacrifice innocent people to achieve his goals, though he also retains a subtle, often dark, playful side.
Helbram's primary role in the story is as an antagonist. During the fight festival in the town of Byzel, he disguises himself as a referee named Love Helm to monitor the Seven Deadly Sins. He later confronts his former friend, King. In their battle, their shared history causes King to hesitate, but Helbram shows no such restraint, using his magical abilities to gain the upper hand. He meets his end when King, having resolved himself, kills him once more. As Helbram dies, his sanity returns, and he finally lets go of the hatred that had consumed him for centuries. His body is later reanimated a second time, but with his soul severely degraded, he is barely coherent. He begs King to grant him a final death, which King does with great sorrow.
After this final death, Helbram’s soul does not immediately pass on. Instead, it comes to reside inside a helmet he had given to King in the past. King can see and speak with him only while wearing the helmet. In this form, Helbram returns as a supportive, ghostly companion, watching over King and offering him advice. He explains that his sister Elaine asked him to stay and look after her brother. In a final act of sacrifice, Helbram intervenes to save his friend from being possessed by the vengeful spirits of the very people he had killed centuries ago. This action causes his soul to be destroyed, and the helmet containing him is crushed, marking his final and complete departure.
Helbram’s abilities center on his unique magic called Synchronization. This power allows him to borrow the magical power of other Holy Knights who agree to lend it to him, and he can draw from multiple people simultaneously. A more forceful version of this ability, called Blind Follow, allows him to temporarily take control of a person’s mind and take their magic by force. This capacity to harness the power of others makes him a formidable opponent. As a fairy, he also possesses inherent abilities such as flight, the manipulation of the Sacred Tree’s roots, and the power to transform his appearance, which he uses extensively to maintain his human disguise. His individual Combat Class is rated at 1400.
