Description
Hugues Augre is a supporting character in the narrative, known as the feudal lord of Territoire, a region within the kingdom of Brune. He holds the rank of count and serves as a general, primarily functioning as a tactician and supplier for the Silver Meteor Army. In his later years, Hugues is described as an old man who typically wears a red coat and a blue cap when away from the battlefield.
He is established as a long-time friend and acquaintance of Mashas Rodant, which connects him to the broader circle of nobles who remain loyal to the House of Vorn. Before the Brune Civil War, Hugues demonstrated his support by providing Tigrevurmud Vorn, often called Tigre, with supplies of soldiers. Initially, he remains neutral upon hearing news of Tigre’s early victory, but he agrees to reconsider his position if Tigre can successfully subjugate a group of bandits near his territory. After Tigre accomplishes this task using strategic terrain knowledge and pigeons, Hugues holds a lavish dinner to celebrate the achievement and formally commits the House of Augre to the fight against the lords Thenardier and Ganelon.
Hugues continues to offer his support even after Tigre is declared a traitor by Brune, showing a firm sense of loyalty that does not waver with political tides. During the Silver Meteor Army’s second battle against the Navarre Knights, he personally joins the force led by Elen and devises a notable tactical trap. His men use sandbags to block a river, creating a mud trap that immobilizes the enemy knights, making them easy targets for an ambush. This maneuver contributes significantly to a decisive victory where the opposing force quickly loses two thousand men. After the battle, Hugues demonstrates his trust and long-term commitment by entrusting his son, Gerard, to Tigre. Through his actions and strategic mind, Hugues Augre serves as a reliable and pivotal ally, providing both material support and tactical wisdom during the conflict.
