Description
Alexandra Alshavin, often called Sasha, is a character from the light novel series Lord Marksman and Vanadis. She holds the position of one of the seven Vanadis, the legendary female warriors of the kingdom of Zhcted who are chosen by powerful dragon-related weapons called Viralts. Specifically, she is the Vanadis of Legnica and wields the fire-type Viralt known as Bargren.
Her background is marked by a personal tragedy that profoundly shapes her life. Born into a family where the women suffer from an incurable hereditary blood disease, Alexandra learned from her mother that all the women in her lineage, going back to her great-grandmother, had died around the age of thirty. Her mother, whose own husband had passed away or left before Alexandra's birth, taught her everything necessary to survive, including cooking, cleaning, hunting, and fighting with a dagger. After her mother died when Alexandra was eleven, she left her village to travel the land, seeking a "wonderful husband" and dreaming of having a daughter to whom she could pass on her skills.
Despite her illness, she was chosen by the Viralt Bargren at the age of fifteen. She became a Vanadis and was soon rumored to be the strongest of all seven. Her reputation for valor and nobility earned her great respect among the people of Zhcted and her fellow Vanadis. She initially served as the mediator for the Vanadis, a role that involved intervening in disputes between the other warriors. It was in this capacity that she acted as a mentor and close friend to the Vanadis of Leitmeritz, Eleonora Viltara, whom she guided through rigorous training and taught the responsibilities of their position. Her strength was legendary; she once defeated three other Vanadis simultaneously in a sparring match, including Sophia Obertas.
In terms of personality, Alexandra is known for her strong fortitude, patience, and perseverance. Despite her failing health, she possesses an unyielding will and an optimistic outlook, refusing to simply succumb to her illness. She is described as selfless and benevolent, often putting the well-being of others before her own. She carries herself with a calm and composed demeanor, but is also soft-hearted. She has a shy, secret interest in cooking, which she never admits to anyone.
Her role in the story is that of a wise and powerful senior figure who is largely confined to her sickbed. As her illness progressed, she was forced to retire as mediator, passing the role to her fellow Vanadis, Sofy. Despite her crippled condition, she continues her duty as a Vanadis by observing the political situation in Zhcted from her bed. Her primary motivation is to protect her domain and ensure the stability of Zhcted for as long as she is able. She is deeply concerned for her best friend, Eleonora, and her rashness, leading her to entrust Elen's future to those she trusts, including Elen's adjutant Limlisha and the protagonist Tigrevurmud Vorn.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with Eleonora Viltara is her most significant, acting as a mentor, friend, and older sister figure. She also has a respectful relationship with the Vanadis Ludmila Lurie, who she often had to separate from fighting with Elen. Her relationship with Elizavetta Fomina is more complex and strained; after a disputed joint military operation, Liza invaded Legnica, but they eventually fought alongside each other in a later battle. She meets Tigre in person six months after the Brune Civil War, and after speaking with him, she understands why Elen trusts him so much and entrusts her friend's future to him.
Alexandra’s development culminates in a final act of heroism. Despite her fragile health, she engages in a desperate battle against a powerful demon named Torbalan. During the fight, she awakens the ultimate power of her Viralt, Bargren, manifesting a phoenix-like fire. She successfully kills the demon but her already broken body gives out as a result of overexerting her power. She passes away shortly after the battle, with Elen at her side.
Her notable abilities as a Vanadis are formidable. She is a master of armed combat, specifically wielding two short swords or daggers in a unique fighting style she developed. Her power is considered the greatest among the Vanadis, and her strength and speed were such that she could defeat two other Vanadis in a two-on-one fight almost instantly. As the wielder of Bargren, she commands fire-based abilities, which she can use to burn or cut through her enemies. However, her most defining trait is her extraordinary willpower, which allows her to access the full potential of her weapon even when on the verge of death, cementing her legacy as the strongest of the Vanadis.
