Description
Nureha is a Fox Tail adventurer in the world of Elder Tale, a level ninety Enchanter with the Courtesan subclass, and the guild master of Plant Hwyaden, the largest single guild in the western player city of Minami. She is a contemporary of Shiroe and knew him from the days before the Catastrophe. In the months following that event, she became the effective ruler of Minami. Rather than conquering the city through force, she achieved control by purchasing several of its key structures, most notably the Cathedral, and used her hold on these institutions to keep the adventurer population in line while extending her influence over the Lander nobility and, in a move seen nowhere else, the city's Guard system. She is known by the titles Chancellor of the West and Nagon of the West.
Outwardly, Nureha appears as an enchanting and mysterious woman, beautiful and charismatic, with black wavy hair, pointed fox ears, and a large tail. She can seem friendly and approachable, but this warmth masks a cold and distant interior. Beneath that composed surface she is a deeply lonely person who suffers from cripplingly low self-esteem. Her past before the Catastrophe was painful: she has suggested that in the real world she was plain and unloved, and that the beauty she found in the game was her only refuge. This background left her fragile, anxious, and prone to sleepless nights, and it makes her vulnerable to manipulation by others.
Her central motivation is the desire for belonging and recognition. During the game era, Shiroe was one of the few people who treated her as a capable and ordinary player, and she developed an obsessive infatuation with him. She wants him at her side in Minami, both as an object of affection and as someone who might give her life meaning. When she infiltrates the Libra Festival in Akiba disguised as a Lander writer named Dariella, she arranges a private meeting with Shiroe and tries to persuade and seduce him into joining Plant Hwyaden, telling him the story of her past. He sees through her disguise immediately and ultimately rejects her offer, telling her it would be better for them to be enemies. Rather than crushing her, this rejection becomes a kind of twisted bond; she interprets it as a promise that he will always see her as someone significant, and she returns to Minami having accepted the role of his counterpart and rival.
In the larger story, Nureha serves as the symbolic head of the western faction and the main opposing figure to the Round Table Alliance of Akiba. Her power, however, is not truly her own. The real force behind Plant Hwyaden is Indicus, a former member of the Debauchery Tea Party who treats Nureha as a puppet figurehead. Indicus habitually manipulates and verbally abuses her, feeding her fear that no one will ever love her, and drives many of the guild's schemes behind the scenes. The relationship between the two women is one of a ruler and a puppet, with Nureha gradually becoming aware of how little genuine control she holds.
Among other characters, her interactions are marked by a few significant connections. Touya, a young adventurer she meets while disguised as Dariella, is one of the few who sees through her act; he tells her she does not have to force a smile, and this small act of honesty touches her deeply. Minori, who is Shiroe's disciple and enjoys the kind of close relationship with him that Nureha craves, becomes an unconscious source of jealousy and rivalry for her. Within Minami itself, she is served by loyal followers such as Roreil Dawn, who cares genuinely for her safety and often worries when she disappears on her own.
