In the real world, she was a seventeen-year-old high school student named Isuzu Tonan from a rural area, where she played in the brass band club with a particular fondness for the wood bass. Her older brother, a fan of Gundam, introduced her to the game with a free ticket, and she was drawn to the Bard class because of her love for music, though she did not intend to stay beyond her trial period before the Catastrophe occurred.

Physically, Isuzu is tall and slender with a thin build, a trait she has due to a hormone condition during puberty. She has freckles around her nose and typically wears her hair in a single, long braid. She is self-conscious about these features, feeling her face is plain and considering herself a typical country girl without any particularly distinguishing or beautiful qualities.

Her personality is bright and cheerful, though she often displays a reserved and slightly shy side, especially when interacting with boys. Isuzu struggles with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in her own abilities, particularly her musical talent. Her father is a professional musician whom she admires as a hero, but he explicitly told her she did not have the talent for a professional music career. This led her to believe she lacks natural gifts and was happy to simply enjoy music for its own sake rather than pursuing stardom. She often dismisses praise for her performances as exaggeration and is prone to second-guessing herself. Despite this, she is kind and determined, with a quirky sense of humor; she chose to wield a two-handed spear as a Bard because it somehow felt like a rock star smashing a guitar into an amplifier. She can also be blunt, sometimes chewing out her friends for taking foolish risks without considering her own lack of sensitivity to their feelings.

Before the Catastrophe, Isuzu lived a relatively normal life without much hardship. That changed when she was trapped and forced to join the abusive Hamelin guild. During this time, she felt crushed by their oppressive rule until she and others were rescued by Shiroe and his team. After her escape, she initially joined the Crescent Moon Alliance, where she became a good friend of Serara and was given a cherished lute by the guild leader Marielle. Later, she decided to transfer to the Log Horizon guild specifically to follow her close companion Rundelhaus Code, often called Rudy.

Her primary motivation is her passion for music and performance. She loves to sing and play instruments, and she regularly holds live shows at the Bloom Hall restaurant. During a trip to gather materials for a magic bag, she even organized a musical tour, performing at taverns in various towns. A significant part of her story involves her coming to terms with the impact of her art. After Rudy pointed it out, she realized that the songs from her original world were influencing the People of the Land, who previously only knew 42 songs programmed into the game. This caused her temporary distress, as she felt guilty for potentially appropriating music. However, she eventually overcame this doubt and found her purpose when she sang with genuine emotion to help evacuate a town under attack by wyverns. Her heartfelt song was recognized by the world of Celdesia itself, awakening a unique power.

Isuzu shares a deep and unique bond with Rundelhaus Code. They became close during a summer training camp, forming a peculiar relationship she often likens to that of a pet and its owner. Despite this teasing dynamic, they support each other profoundly; Rudy is often her most thoughtful confidant, helping her work through her insecurities about her father and her musical purpose. She is also very close to Minori. Although Isuzu is older, she mentally relied on Minoris steadiness during the difficult times in Hamelin and wishes to be seen as an equal friend rather than a senior figure. She holds great respect for Minori and looks up to Serara as a motherly figure.

In her role as a Bard, Isuzus greatest strength lies not in direct combat but in her Song Magic, which provides powerful support and continuous buffs to her allies, substantially boosting their combat prowess. She is unusually proficient with a two-handed spear named the Howling Spear, which she uses in battle. Her most treasured possession is her custom lute, which she named Flying Dolphin. The instrument was originally created by Marielle into which members of the Log Horizon guild later incorporated an item to amplify sound and allow for the summoning of a follower. She uses a crafting-grade amber dragon claw given to her by Shiroe as a pick.

Isuzus notable abilities include Harmony Carol, a status buff that launches an extra attack when an ally casts magic, and Cowards Fugue, a spell that makes non-fighter classes appear to deal less damage, helping to manage enemy aggression. Her most significant power is an Overskill known as The 43rd Song. This wide-range song magic can cover an entire city, animating rubble and debris to move and defend everyone in the area. This ability manifested directly from her emotional desire to protect the People of the Land during a wyvern attack, marking the moment her art was truly recognized by the world.
