Description
Leon Lewis, also known as León Luís, is the main protagonist of Garo: The Animation, holding the title of Garo the Golden Knight, a legendary Makai Knight armor. He is the son of Germán Lewis, the Makai Knight Zoro, and Anna, a Makai Priestess. Leon was born during his mother's execution by burning at the stake for witchcraft, an event that haunted him throughout his life. Only his mother's magic and his father's hasty rescue allowed him to survive, and he was raised in exile away from the kingdom of Valiante.

As a result of the constant nightmares and visions of his mother's death, Leon developed a bitter and largely emotionless personality. He is quick to anger, deeply distrustful of others, and naive about the world, which makes social interaction awkward for him. He holds a strong disapproval of his father's womanizing behavior, seeing it as an insult to his mother's memory, and does not hesitate to physically confront his father over it. Despite his abrasive exterior, Leon possesses a kind heart, but he is apathetic about his duties as a Makai Knight. His primary motivation is revenge against those responsible for his mother's death, rather than the protection of humanity from Horrors, demonic beings that feed on human darkness. He views the Garo armor as a personal heirloom from his mother and is initially oblivious to the broader responsibility it carries.

His role in the story begins as a lone avenger who returns to Valiante seeking retribution. He eventually crosses paths with Prince Alfonso San Valiante, his maternal cousin, who is also the rightful ruler of the kingdom. Their relationship evolves from rivalry to cooperation, especially after Leon loses control during a battle with the villain Mendoza. Implanted visions of his mother's death cause him to transform into a Lost Soul Beast, a monstrous form that unleashes a destructive inferno, destroying the town of Santa Bard and harming innocent people. In the aftermath, Alfonso deems Leon unworthy of the Golden Knight title and confiscates his armor, sword, and the damaged magical ring Zaruba. Mentally shattered and without purpose, Leon attempts suicide by throwing himself off a cliff, but survives.

This low point becomes the catalyst for his development. Over time, Leon discards his singular drive for revenge and begins to embrace the true meaning of being a protector. He reconciles with Alfonso, reclaims his armor, and learns that the flames he once considered a curse are actually a blessing from his mother, a symbol of her love and protection. In the Divine Flame film and subsequent arcs, Leon continues his duties as a Makai Knight, taking on the responsibility of training his younger half-brother Roberto to inherit their late father's title. He matures into a more balanced individual who fights not just for personal vengeance but for the safety of others.

As a Makai Knight, Leon wields the Golden Armor of Garo, which grants him enhanced strength, agility, and the ability to fight Horrors. He also possesses innate flame-based abilities inherited from his mother, which he learns to control and harness as a weapon. His Lost Soul Beast form, while dangerous, represents both a vulnerability and a reservoir of raw power. With his growth, he becomes a reliable ally and a worthy bearer of the Garo legacy.
