Description
Mendosa is the central antagonist of the story and a figure whose actions drive much of the conflict. He was originally a Makai Priest, a member of the secretive order that fights against monstrous Horrors to protect humanity. Within this order, Mendosa held a particular belief that the Makai should be revered as gods by ordinary people. This arrogant ambition led him to create a powerful Madō Tool called Zirkel's Circle, a device that could control Horrors but required human blood to function. Mendosa considered the sacrifice of a few normal people an acceptable price, a view that led to his excommunication from the Makai Order. As punishment for his transgression, he was magically branded with glowing red marks across his body, and a curse was placed on his bloodline, ensuring his descendants would forever be banished.
After his exile, Mendosa wandered until he arrived in the kingdom of Valiante, posing as a traveling monk. He used his forbidden knowledge as a Makai Priest to perform seemingly miraculous feats, such as predicting battle outcomes and healing the sick during an epidemic. For these services, the king rewarded him with a noble position as royal adviser and a beautiful bride. Mendosa attempted to start a new life, but when his wife gave birth to their first child, he saw that the curse had passed onto his new family. To hide his past and spare them the consequences of his own actions, he committed the horrific act of murdering his wife, his child, and the midwife who attended the birth, disposing of their bodies in the sea. This traumatic event transformed his earlier arrogance into a deep, hate-filled desire for revenge against the Makai Order that had branded him. He vowed to destroy the Order and achieve godlike power by reviving the ancient Horror named Anima and becoming its living vessel.
In his role as the king's trusted adviser, Mendosa began his systematic revenge. He secretly poisoned the king and manipulated Valiante's devout Christian faith to launch a brutal witch hunt, branding all Makai Knights and Priests as heretics and servants of the devil. With the help of his ruthless aide Octavia and a fallen Makai Knight named Bernardo Dion, Mendosa effectively isolated Valiante from the rest of the Makai Order. He used his intimate knowledge of the Order's operations to issue false commands, leading knights and priests into ambushes where they were captured, tortured, and executed. Hundreds were killed, and their souls were trapped in a crystal to fuel the resurrection of Anima. Among his most notable victims was a pregnant Makai Priestess named Anna, who was of the bloodline that bears the legendary Golden Armor, Garo. Mendosa personally ordered her execution by burning at the stake. He continued his ruthless pursuit for seventeen years, aiming to eliminate her son León, who survived and inherited the Garo armor, as well as Prince Alfonso, whose mother was also of the Garo bloodline.
Mendosa is defined by his cunning, his apathy toward human life, and his conviction that his actions are justified. He sees ordinary humans and even the Makai Knights as tools or obstacles to be removed. Despite his calm and manipulative exterior as a royal adviser, he is consumed by his past humiliation and his ambition for revenge. His key relationships are defined by this objective. He is the primary enemy of the protagonists León and Alfonso, having personally killed León's mother and destroyed Alfonso's family by framing the queen for treason and seizing the throne. He also has a complex relationship with the Watch Dog Garm, a powerful being who knows of his survival and tasks another character, Germán, with a mission that involves him, despite understanding his evil intentions.
Mendosa undergoes significant development from a powerful but arrogant Makai Priest to a reviled, exiled monster, and finally to a horrifying quasi-deity. After an initial confrontation where he is seemingly killed by a Horror he summoned, he survives, though the ordeal costs him much of his remaining lifespan, leaving him looking elderly. He ultimately succeeds in absorbing the ancient Horror Anima, obtaining immense power for his final confrontation. In the end, his fate is an ironic and eternal one. Rather than becoming a god, he is dragged into the Makai realm where the magical flames of Anna's final protective spell, passed through her son, engulf him, condemning him to burn for eternity.
Mendosa possesses formidable abilities derived from his training as a Makai Priest and his forbidden research. He is a skilled alchemist and sorcerer, capable of creating powerful magical tools like the Zirkel's Circle. He can also cast potent spells, including one capable of trapping the Golden Knight Garo. However, his most notable power is his knowledge and ability to manipulate Horrors. He can summon, control, and even bind these demons to his will, using them as his personal army and assassins. Beyond direct combat magic, his true strength lies in his strategic and manipulative cunning, using political power and deception to destroy his enemies from within their own society.
