TV-Series
Description
Kazuki Kurebayashi is the younger twin brother of Yuzuki Kurebayashi, and he stands as one of the few individuals who is not a Selector yet remains fully aware of the secretive and dangerous nature of the Selector battles. At the beginning of the series, he is fourteen years old and attends the same middle school as his sister. Physically, Kazuki is recognized by his shoulder-length black hair, which he typically keeps tied back in a ponytail, and his golden eyes. As a casual player of the WIXOSS card game, he possesses a strong understanding of its mechanics, having played it since before it became popular and before he learned about its hidden, darker side.
Kazuki’s personality is predominantly friendly, kind, and sociable, making him well-liked among his peers. Despite this popularity, he can be somewhat oblivious, particularly when it comes to matters of romance and the true intentions of others. This cluelessness extends to his deep, complex relationship with his sister. He is fiercely protective of Yuzuki and becomes visibly angry when anyone speaks ill of her, demonstrating that his otherwise calm demeanor has a clear limit. He often acts as a supportive advisor, using his knowledge of WIXOSS to help Yuzuki and her friend Rūko strategize during their battles. In his childhood, Kazuki was described as incredibly shy, and he credits Yuzuki for helping him become the more confident and outgoing person he is in the present.
Driven by a sense of gratitude and a desire to help his sister, Kazuki's primary motivation is to support Yuzuki in her goals. He originally introduced her to the WIXOSS game and gave her the special Red Ambition deck that contained the LRIG Hanayo, hoping it would help her make friends. Unaware of the true stakes of the Selector battles, he initially helps her pursue her wish, only later coming to understand the grim reality of the game. His role in the story evolves from a supporting figure and mentor on the sidelines to a more active participant who helps Rūko and the others in their attempt to stop the Selector battles entirely. While his presence is more minor in the first half of Selector spread WIXOSS due to being in a relationship with Hanayo, he becomes crucial in the final episodes after discovering the truth about his sister’s fate.
The most significant and complicated relationship in Kazuki’s life is with his twin sister, Yuzuki. He is extremely considerate of her and is deeply grateful for her influence on his life, though he is initially completely unaware of her romantic feelings for him. This unawareness forms a central part of his character arc. After Hanayo, inhabiting Yuzuki's body, confesses Yuzuki’s love, Kazuki realizes that he reciprocates those feelings, stating he has always loved Yuzuki in the same way. He then begins dating who he believes is Yuzuki. Upon discovering the truth that his real sister is trapped within a LRIG card, he is shocked but quickly accepts reality. He demonstrates a new, almost supernatural ability to sense Yuzuki's presence from within her card and can tell when she is upset, holding onto her card protectively until the conflict with Mayu is resolved. By the end of the series, the nature of their relationship is left somewhat ambiguous, but it is apparent that they have grown much closer as a result of their shared ordeal.
Kazuki’s development throughout the series traces a path from oblivious support to painful awareness and finally to determined action. He transitions from being a well-meaning boy who unknowingly encourages his sister’s dangerous wish to a young man who must confront the twisted consequences of that wish. He learns the horrifying truth about the Selector system, including that his sister has lost her body and that he has been dating an LRIG in her place. This revelation does not break him; instead, he uses his unique position as a non-Selector with full knowledge to aid the other characters, proposing theories about the mysterious Mayu and physically assisting in the search for her mansion. By the end, he has moved from a passive role to an active supporter in the effort to end the battles and reclaim his sister’s life.
While Kazuki is not a Selector and therefore cannot engage in the mystical battles himself, he possesses notable abilities related to his deep understanding of the WIXOSS game. He is a skilled and experienced player, primarily using a Green deck focused on Living Spirit and Nature Spirit cards, and is capable of giving effective strategic advice to active Selectors in the midst of a high-stakes battle. Furthermore, after discovering the truth about his sister, he develops a keen spiritual intuition, allowing him to sense Yuzuki’s presence and emotions even when she is trapped inside a card, a skill that other characters do not possess.
