Description
Kanji Tatsumi is a first-year student at Yasogami High School in the rural town of Inaba, known throughout the area as a fearsome delinquent with a short temper. This reputation largely stems from an incident in middle school where he single-handedly defeated a local biker gang that had been causing trouble. His family runs the Tatsumi Textiles shop in the town's central shopping district, where he lives with his mother.

Despite his intimidating appearance, which includes bleached hair, multiple piercings, and a skull-print shirt that he often wears under his uniform jacket, Kanji's personality is far more complex than his tough exterior suggests. He is hot-blooded, loud, and easily riled up, often reacting with immediate aggression when frustrated or embarrassed. However, he is also deeply respectful to his upperclassmen, addressing them as senpai, and has a genuine, caring nature that he struggles to express openly. His core internal conflict stems from his secret passion for traditionally feminine hobbies, such as sewing, knitting, and crafting cute dolls. After being mocked by girls for these interests when he was younger, he developed a deep-seated fear of rejection and began to hide his true self behind a mask of hyper-masculine toughness. This fear led to a complex where he felt he despised women and became confused about his own sexuality, questioning whether his interests meant he was attracted to men.

Kanji becomes a victim of the mysterious kidnappings occurring in Inaba and is thrown into the TV World, a dimension that reflects people's hidden hearts. There, he is confronted by his Shadow, a twisted, flamboyant manifestation of his repressed feelings. This Shadow openly declares his insecurities, including his secret love of "stupid cute shit" and his fear of girls, which have led him to wonder if he might prefer men. After the protagonist and his friends help him face this other self, Kanji rejects his initial denial and accepts his Shadow as a part of who he truly is. This acceptance awakens his Persona, a power that allows him to fight back. He then joins the Investigation Team, motivated by a desire to help others and find the person who threw him into the TV world. The Social Link he forms with the protagonist represents the Emperor Arcana.

His role within the team is that of a powerful physical fighter. In battle, he primarily uses a variety of blunt objects, like chairs and tables, to deliver devastating physical attacks. His initial Persona is Take-Mikazuchi, a large, black, skeletal-looking, robotic humanoid that wields a lightning bolt. This Persona reflects Kanji's blend of toughness and artistic flair, with its design echoing the skull motif on his shirt. As he grows more confident in himself and his social bonds, his Persona evolves first into Rokuten Maoh, a figure with a fiery motif, and later in Persona 4 Golden to Take-Jizaiten, gaining even greater power and resistance to attacks. In addition to his combat prowess, he is exceptionally skilled at textile crafts, a talent he eventually learns to take pride in rather than hide.

Kanji forms key relationships with the other members of the Investigation Team. He is frequently bickering with Yosuke Hanamura, who often teases him about his insecurities. He shares a mutual respect with Chie Satonaka and Yukiko Amagi, whom he has known since childhood, and is unphased by Rise Kujikawa's fame as an idol. He develops a particularly close bond with Naoto Shirogane, initially mistaking Naoto for a boy and becoming deeply flustered by the attraction he feels, which further complicates his confusion about his sexuality. Once the truth is revealed, his genuine and protective feelings for Naoto remain, suggesting that his attraction is to Naoto as a person rather than to a specific gender. Over the course of the story, Kanji's development sees him shed his aggressive facade and embrace all parts of himself, both the traditionally "masculine" and "feminine," learning that true strength comes from self-acceptance and the courage to be vulnerable with others.
