Description
In the narrative of Persona 4 the Golden Animation, Izanami-no-Okami is the true antagonist and the ultimate source of the strange events occurring in the town of Inaba. Her identity is that of a deity who originally existed as a single, complete being known as Izanami-no-Mikoto. This original goddess held two primary functions: to protect humanity and to grant their wishes, regardless of the potential consequences. Over time, the growing and unchecked desires of humanity caused a split within this being. The aspect dedicated to granting desires grew immensely powerful and separated to become Izanami-no-Okami, while the protective aspect became a much weaker entity named Kusumi-no-Okami, who would later lose her memories and take the form of the girl known as Marie. Izanami-no-Okami further split off two more fragments of herself, Kunino-sagiri and Ameno-sagiri, to act as her agents in the human world.

Izanami-no-Okami is a detached and curious deity who views humanity as subjects for an experiment. Her primary motivation is to discern the true desires of the human heart. Observing that people often avoid painful truths in favor of comforting lies, she hypothesizes that humanity’s deepest wish is to live in a world of blissful ignorance, shrouded in fog. To test this, she takes on a disguise, appearing as a seemingly unassuming gas station attendant. In this form, she personally greets three newcomers to Inaba—Tohru Adachi, Taro Namatame, and the protagonist, Yu Narukami—and by shaking their hands, she bestows upon them the potential to wield a Persona and the ability to enter the TV World. She watches over the following year as these three individuals, representing emptiness, despair, and hope respectively, use their powers and influence the town, all to see which desire would ultimately prevail.

Her role in the story is that of the hidden mastermind, orchestrating the chaos from behind the scenes. While Adachi and Namatame act as the immediate antagonists, their actions are enabled by the power Izanami gave them and the environment she created. The Midnight Channel and the strange fog that plagues Inaba are manifestations of her power, designed to expose the collective unconscious desires of the townspeople. She remains in the background until the very end, confident that her identity will never be discovered. Only by pursuing the true ending, rejecting all false conclusions, does the protagonist uncover her existence. At that point, she acknowledges his persistence and challenges him and the Investigation Team to a final battle within the depths of the TV World, a location that mirrors the mythological underworld of Yomi.

A key relationship in the Golden animation is her connection to Marie. Marie is the amnesiac, fragmented form of Kusumi-no-Okami, the protective half of the original deity. This makes Marie a direct counterpart and a separated part of Izanami-no-Okami herself. Izanami-no-Okami views Marie with a kind of detached mockery, referring to the Old Bamboo Comb, a cursed item Marie holds onto, as a symbol of their separation. If the protagonist has formed a strong bond with Marie, Izanami-no-Okami will acknowledge the trouble he has caused by defeating her Sagiri fragments and saving this lost part of herself. Following her defeat, the fragments of her being—Izanami-no-Okami, Kunino-sagiri, and Ameno-sagiri—all merge back into Marie, restoring her to the complete, original goddess, Izanami-no-Mikoto.

In terms of development, Izanami-no-Okami is a static character whose will is tested rather than changed. She begins as a god certain that humanity desires falsehood and destruction. Through the protagonist's unwavering pursuit of the truth, she is confronted with a counterexample. Even in defeat, she does not rage but instead expresses genuine surprise and, in a sense, accepts the outcome. She concedes that perhaps she was wrong about humanity and acknowledges the strength found in the bonds between people, vanishing with a wish for them to create their own future.

Her notable abilities are immense, stemming from her divine nature. She is not a Shadow but a god-like entity who exerts influence over the entire region of Inaba. She created the TV World as a space that reflects the human subconscious. In combat, her power is overwhelming. She initially appears in a false form, a large figure wrapped in a white robe, which is invulnerable to attack. Only by using the Orb of Sight can her true form be revealed: a corpse-like, rotting figure evocative of the death deity from Japanese myth. In this state, known as Izanami-no-Okami, she possesses immense strength, high endurance, and powerful magical abilities, including Agidyne, Bufudyne, Ziodyne, Garudyne, and a vast array of Almighty attacks like Megidolaon and World's End. She can also use skills like Power Charge and Mind Charge to amplify her damage. Her most notorious ability is Thousand Curses, which can instantly banish a party member from the fight. She is defeated only when the protagonist's social bonds manifest as the ultimate Persona, Izanagi-no-Okami, who uses the unique skill Myriad Truths.
